PS Vita

Some of you might have read an interview of me on website Eurogamer, where I said I am not sure I will keep actively hacking the Vita myself now that the playstation suite SDK is available in open Beta.

Recently, some interesting things have been released through the PSS, such as a NES emulator. Technically, Sony are giving us the tools to develop homebrews on their platform, so in theory their shouldn’t be any need for more hacks, right? Well, I believe that’s not true, and I’ll explain why.

A few weeks ago, an anonymous hacker released a dump of the flash0 from the PSP emulator running on the PS Vita. Although it brought nothing new for the end user, it was a verifiable proof that this hacker has access to a kernel exploit running on the PSP emulator.

This week, the same dev apparently got PS1 games to run on the Vita, as shown in the video below (thanks to the Z)

A few weeks ago, our forum member The Z twitted about a “leak” of a full dump of the Flash0 of the PSP emu on the PS Vita. Unless you’ve been in the homebrew scene for a while, this probably doesn’t mean anything to you. Worse, you’ve been getting mixed signals from various people or websites, some of them going as far as claiming claiming this cracks the vita open, etc…

So what does this really mean for the end user? Well, in the short term, absolutely nothing, but read along for more details.

Less than 24hours after our public announcement of the existence of a vulnerability in the PSP game “Super Collapse 3″, Sony pulled out the game from their store, like they did for Motorstorm and Everybody’s Tennis before.

Now comes the stressful moment for me: releasing the VHBL files publicly, and cross fingers that it works correctly on everybody’s Vita.

Just a quick note because I don’t have much time to go in details: I just got an email from Sony saying that the Playstation Suite open Beta is (finally! It’s not like the console was out for 5 months already) now available.

If you have ideas of apps or games you would like to see on the vita and/or Android, think you have the skills to do it, and, who knows, hope you might get rich by selling it on the psn store, check their official page here:

(wow, I’m blogging two days in a row about cool stuff that Sony is doing, what’s wrong with me lately?)

It is rare for me to mention when Sony does something right, so let me do this today.

Hey everyone, quickly showcasing the work in progress for VHBL‘s port to thecobra’s exploit. To be honest, thecobra’s really done most of the work here, and I merely tweaked it to clean up the code, before compiling and giving it a try.

On the video below, I’m playing doom (again? I should be a bit more creative…) on PS Vita firmware 1.67.

Hope you didn’t wait too long since our last VHBL release a bit more than 2 weeks ago… This is a new PSP user mode exploit by thecobra (also discovered a while ago by WosRet), which I confirmed runs on a PS Vita with Firmware 1.67. Unlike Motorstorm and Everybody’s Tennis, this game is available in the US store as well as some other countries (details to come). Check the video and details below. Read the rest of this entry »

For some of us, the vita has been out for 5 months now. I could talk about how the screen looks great, how I’m happy that Sony put 2 analog controllers on the device, etc… but I’d rather focus on the things that Sony failed to achieve with the PS Vita. In the past 5 months, customers have been patiently waiting for useful firmware update that never came, or simply being updated on some of the promises that have yet to be fulfilled…

So let’s have a look at the 10 things I think Sony should have done better with the Vita, or that should have been improved in the past 5 months.
