VHBL For Everybody’s Tennis

What is it?

Vita Half-Byte Loader is a project to port the PSP homebrew loader HBL to the Playstation Vita, through the PSP emulator on the Playstation Vita.

This is the official VHBL download page for people who own a copy of the PSP Game Everybody’s Tennis (also known as Hot Shots Tennis, or Minna no Tennis). If you don’t own this game, go back to the VHBL page to see if we have a version of VHBL working with a game you own.

Check the VHBL page for more details on this tool.

How to Install and Run HBL on Everybody’s Tennis

  • It is *strongly* recommended that you turn of all wireless connections on your PS Vita, and that you use OpenCMA on your PC instead of the regular CMA. This is recommended because otherwise your console has a way to force you to upgrade the firmware even before you get a chance to use the exploit.
  • Extract the HBL archive matching your version of the game in your CMA PSP Savedata folder. It is a folder on your PC named PSSAVEDATA/[lots of random characters here]. If you don’t know where it is, check your settings in CMA
  • Connect your PS Vita to the PC through the CMA, it should give you the possibility to copy the savedata from your PC to the Vita. If not, you probably extracted it in the wrong folder. (Note: You will also want to install some homebrews with a similar technique, read the section below)
  • To run HBL, start the Tennis game, select “Continue” in the Main Menu. At this point, HBL should start

How to Install and Run Homebrews

Installing homebrews on the PSP was an easy task. On the Vita, until better solutions are provided, it’s quite a pain in the ***.
The CMA will only let you copy savedata, and will not recursively browse folders.

To address this, HBL comes with a tool that can extract archives with a specific structure.

Packaging the homebrew for installation on the Vita:
1) download PSP homebrews from your favorite website
2) extract the homebrew somewhere on your hard drive, and with your favorite utility, zip it again with the *store* setting (no compression), in a file that you will name “install.zip”
3) take any PSP savedata (but not the one used for HBL!), and add the “install.zip” to that folder, in your PC CMA folder. so your PSP Savedata will look something like this:
in folder PSSAVEDATA/1a2b3c4def5678/UCUS12345000/ (or something like this) you will have the following files:
– ICON0.png
– PIC1.png
– DATA.bin
– PARAMS.SFO
– install.zip

Here you can download an example of packaged homebrew: Doom

Installing:
1) run OpenCMA on your PC, and CMA on your Vita
2) copy the previously packaged SAVEDATA (see above) with your homebrew in “install.zip” on your Vita
3) run HBL (how to run HBL is explained in the previous section)
4) navigate with the HBL menu to the SAVEDATA folder, then go to the folder you just downloaded (in my example, UCUS12345000), and click cross or circle on it
5) At this point, the HBL menu should ask you if you want to install the homebrew. select yes, and wait until HBL is done extracting your homebrew
6) The homebrew is now installed, and you can run it by going to the GAME folder, if everything went well, a new subfolder with your homebrew has been created here, and you can run the homebrew

OpenCMA is strongly recommended to install if you want to use VHBL. Open CMA is a tool by Virtuous Flame that allows you to copy files from and to your vita without being connected to the internet. This is useful, especially if you don’t want Sony to forcefully update your firmware.

Hey Wololo i miss a lot on HBL Delete Files Directly in VHBL and copy Files Back to the PC for Savedata like SNESTYL and other savedatas from Homebrew is a way to make this real?

    • wololo says:

The APIs to use HBL and create a menu are public. I’m considering making wMenu open source, but I would also love to see other people coming up with their own Menus for VHBL. This way we would see more options such as the possibility to delete homebrews, etc… in the meantime, maybe you can use psp filer, or simply delete them from CMA.

    • John says:

Wololo. Quick question… I cannot seem to get PSPFiler running… Is there a way to remove Homebrew games from the Vita once they are installed?

      • wololo says:

there’s a delete option in CMA, but I admit it’s not very convenient because it shows all your homebrews as “corrupt” so you can’t tell which is which. Let me ask once again for people to stand up and start coding alternative to wMenu. the API is simple, and an example is available in the HBL SVN. I don’t have time these days to improve wMenu unfortunately

    No HK version?

    • wololo says:

What is the code of the HK version? ULUS… UCES… ?

    • John says:

Hey David… I downloaded the HK version of Everybodys Tennis from the Taiwan PSN network, but it somehow ended up corrupted… and since it has been removed from the PSN store I cannot redownload it there. I doubt this will work, but do you have time to send me a backup of that game… I can try to do a restore from that…

      Many thanks

from what I heard ps3 doesn’t always copy all the vhbl files correctly, so it may not work but always worth a try I guess ^^’

For some reason, when i try installing a homebrew (Daedalus or Snes), when VHBL asks me to install it, i click yes, and nothing happens, if i try it again, it just seems to freeze and makes a sort of clicking noise… Any tips??

    • tt128 says:

mime also makes that clicking noise. someone help please!

      • hassifa says:

I have had that same problem with the gba homebrew i tried to install. The Snes one worked fine though. I will try to install the gba through the game that i used for the snes and see if that makes any difference.

Thank you for the latest VHBL of “EveryBody’s Tennis”. But there’s a serious problem to us because my version of Game is HongKong and I can’t load the savedata successfully. The code of the HK version is UCAS40307 ,different from the other three code which you have released yesterday. I tried to change the language of console such as English,Fracais, deutsch and it has no effect either. So please help me to solve my trouble, thank you.

Hi, thank you so much for packaging doom for us already, I am a bit of a simpleton when it comes to all of this and have been unable to reproduce this for any emulators of any kind. is it possible someone can package up some homebrew for us and put them up available to download? as the only thing ive been able to get running is doom (as you did it for me! haha)

Also another potentially silly question, how on earth do i save in the doom game? (if at all)

    • james says:

I have answered my own question RE: doom if you push triangle and select it brings up the in game menu! For those of you who were also wondering!
