Questions about ARK vs. vanilla Vita

Post by Winged Rabbit »

Hi all. I'm considering getting ARK for my Vita, but I'm concerned about potential downsides, and, though I know that there are almost always benefits to Homebrew/CFW, I'm unsure what they are in this case.

I hear you can play PSX games on ARK, without sound, but I thought you could already buy PSX games from Vita's store. If so, would installing ARK negate the sound on any PSX games on my Vita as is?
With ARK, can one edit saves, mod games, or install region-locked games?
Does ARK have any effect on Vita games?
What kinds of behaviours when using ARK, could get me in trouble with Sony?
Can ARK be cleanly uninstalled?
Are there any downsides I should be worried about?

ARK runs under the Vita's PSP emulator.
Running PS1 games does not have sound.
It does not affect Vita side games and apps.
It does not affect the sound in official PSN bought PS1 games.
You can buy PS1 games from PSN, but not all PS1 games are available.
You can edit saves, mod games and run region locked games.
I haven't seen or heard of anyone getting banned from running ARK.
Yes, it can be uninstalled cleanly by removing the ARK (PSP) save and reinstalling the original game that ARK uses for the bubble. it currently does not work above 3.63.
If you are on 3.60, you can install a native Vita side hack, HENkaku Ensō. From there you can install Adrenaline CFW by TheFlow. With Adrenaline on 3.60 (or 3.65) you can run PS1 games with sound. I have not tested it myself though and do not know the downsides of it.

ARK requires a specific firmware, and usually requires a purchased game to run. What firmware are you running? If you are on 3.60 or below then there is no reason to install Ark because there are better alternatives. It's kind of impossible to point you in the right direction unless we know your exact firmware.

Ark is a PSP emulator! The only reason ARK can't enable sound for PS1 games is because the emulator runs in PSP mode not PS1 mode. ARK has no effect on purchased PS1 games, they will function fine and have sound (because the Vita runs them in PS1 mode).

ARK can run just about any PSP ISO that isn't available on the PSN, and you don't even need ARK to mod PSP game saves.

No ARK is only PSP side so it doesn't have access to the Ps Vita game folder.

Nobody has reported being banned because of ARK, but that doesn't mean there is no risk.

Yes

The only downside is the firmware requirements and the fact Ark usually needs a specific purchased game from the PSN. Tell us what firmware you're on and we can probably figure out what you need to do.
Does it quit? If not, then it's legit... Too legit.

Thanks for the information!
I'm on 3.67. I thought I read somewhere that it could be used on that firmware. I have FFT: War of the Lions, and Persona 3 Portable purchased and downloaded from PSN.

As far as I know 3.65 is the latest OFW that can run ARK.

3.67 is HBL only so unless you only want PSP based emulators and the such you will need to wait for TheFlow to release the updated HENkaku.
That will enable the use of Adrenaline for your firmware.
