Improve Internet Speed for Vita

Post by JayCeeDenton » Sat May 24, 2014 5:17 pm

Wololo recently posted about using DMZ to improve internet connections, however DMZ is a huge security risk as anyone will tell you. This method will do theoretically the same process, only much more secure. It is called Port-forwarding. Port-forwarding is essentially "cutting out the middle man" in order to have a direct line with a server. Please keep in mind to follow directions carefully otherwise putting your connection in danger, just as DMZ does. I cannot be held responsible if you do something wrong and something negative happens. In this tutorial I will be using Verizon and a USA connection as an example since it is the ISP I have. Do not feel discouraged if you do not have Verizon or live outside the USA. The process should be the similar if not the same. When in doubt or have questions, contact your ISP for help. Let's begin.

1. First on your computer, connect to your network.

2. Open any internet browser and in the address bar type your router's IP address. To find your IP address, open CMD from your programs if you are on Windows, and type [ipconfig] without the brackets, and hit enter. Whatever number you see next to "Default Gateway" is the number you type into the browser address bar, and hit enter. If you are using an OS other than Windows, a quick Google search will allow you to find the method for your specific OS.

3. Most likely there will be a login page for security reasons. Type in your username and password. The default login information should be on the side of your router, unless you've changed it to something else. If you have trouble logging in, contact your ISP for help.

4. Click on the "Firewall" section, and if a warning pops up, click "Yes". The warning is basically the same warning I gave at the top of this guide. Click "Port Forwarding".

5. You want to add a new port forwarding rule. If you have ever connected your Vita to this network, it should appear under the drop down menu. It may be listed under "Vita" or by its IP address. To find your Vita's IP address, check your Vita. It will be under "Network Settings". Select your Vita from the dropdown menu then. If it does not appear, manually type in your Vita's IP address under "Specify IP". Then select "Custom Ports".

-There are two choices to choose from, "UDP" and "TCP". First let's add SCEA's ports. These are all games published by SCEA. Be sure to click "Apply" for settings to go into effect after each port you enter, otherwise you're wasting your time.

UDP Ports: 3478, 3479
TCP Ports: 80, 443, 465, 983, 3479, 3480, 5223, 8080

-To add other game ports, Google "[game name]+ port forwarding". Again I stress security for this step. Only allow port forwarding to a source that can be trusted. As long as you use ports listed by game companies, you won't have to worry. In my example, I'll use Wipeout 2048. In this case, the ports will be...

UDP Ports: 10060-10080
TCP Ports: 10060-10080

6. You're done! Everything should connect and run both faster and smoother.

I think if someone screws their stuff up following your tutorial then you should be responsible. Seeing as its not as clear as it could be and you are directly telling people how to bugger around with stuff.

I'm saying if a person messes up because they don't follow my directions its not my fault. Read it again, I even implored people to call their ISP instead of just guessing if they are not sure about a step. I'd say literally any modification progress has a warning like this so people know they are responsible for their actions.

Thank you Jaycee, im a network engineer, so it was easy for me to follow, but darktbs i dont think he should be help personally responsibly, but for a proper 100% tutorial you should probably explain a little background on port forwarding/triggering and your routers internal firewall. Anywho, i just applied the settings, so i hope it helps my vita, because it should have more than enough speed to do what it needs to do, but takes forever to download things
