As seen in the pictures featuring the development kit. Then someone commented : it looks alot slimmer than ours. Well yea it looks slimmer too. No wonder PS Vita designer Takashi Sogabe said : "The original design of the PS Vita, for example, was very much thinner than the current retail product,"
So why Sony dumped the HDMI? marketing as save it for later, make the crowd drool later on? i really dont think putting a HDMI port will instantly make the PS Vita retail production price skyrocket....
Not to mention if PS Vita gets hacked, it willl most surely have it's own RemoteJoy version. So later HDMI implementation would be pretty much worthless.

What is Sony thinking??
I dont think Sony dumped the HDMI port, IMO there is one on the Vita now. If you look at the top right under the flap on the top of the Vita there is another port. Sony never said what it was for other than other peripherals and extensions. IMO I think thats an HDMI port that will use a special Vita Sony only cable that they will release in the future.
The original design was slimmer but they expanded on it adding more. Thats a developer kit for software devs, not the first design of the Vita btw.

With what they pulled worth the memory card physical size it would not surprise me if they came out with an odd HDMI cable that is extremely over priced. Oh, and I bet the cable would be two feet long, just because.
it's a dev's vita, but i dunno why it has USB mini and an HDMI port. i don't think that they will add a HDMI on retail version, maybe they gonna sell a cable for that special port to HDMI.

The real question is, which of us will give in and buy the PS Vita Slim when it's released, even if it's very similar to the dev unit & original design? ;p
Because I can't be sure that the 3rd retail hardware revision will be better than the 2nd... earlier PS3's were better, and while I do like my PSP 3000, I can't really say that it's that much better than my PSP-2000 Slim.
But I'd agree that there is a fair chance that one of the ports on the current Vita will have HDMI-ish capability, with the added negative of a proprietary cable. The Slim design of the dev unit will hopefully be improved somewhat for any future retail hardware releases, but there's no way to know unless you're Sony. It's entirely possible that they feel the developer Vita hardware is worth $400-600, and will feel justified in releasing it at a more reasonable price as the 2nd version of the Vita.

It would be nice if we could get some proper measurements - pictures aren't great here, especially since black is slimming - but I wouldn't be surprised if you're fundamentally right here. For example there's no indication as to whether the dev model uses the same battery (dev units would spend most of their time plugged in), which is a big part of the reason the Vita is as thick as it is. Certainly the iFixit teardown doesn't leave much room for trimming space with the current component selection.
