This, and you want a dedicated graphics card (read: do not get something with intel integrated graphics unless it also has a second card dedicated to gaming) with at least 512MB of video ram. I personally prefer nvidia cards, but ati has a fair lineup as well.naki-the-curious wrote: well you want at least 2.3GHz with Dual Core for gaming purposes, if you want it for pure gaming you want over 3GHz (which is quite expensive).
if you're running vista, you need at the very least 4 gigs of ram, if its windows 7, 2 is manageable, 4 is better.
you also want the harddrive to run at 5400 rpm or faster. 4200 rpm drives are painfull... both for load times, and general performance.
oh, and back to processors, make sure you don't get scr..ed over by getting one with a 2.0 or 2.2 GHz clock rate that only has a 2MB (or smaller) L2 cache. (I think that one had a 1MB cache..... yyyeeeeeaaaahhhhh........ ) Aim for a 4MB cache or higher. You're better off having a 2.0 with a 4MB cache than a 2.2 with a 2MB cache
