Teathering iPhone to vita

Postby SNAFU » Tue Mar 20, 2012 4:48 am

Hi all,
Just wondering if other ppl have had trouble with using apple's 'personal hot-spot' for an Internet connection on their vita. When I bought the vita this was one of the reasons I didn't get a 3G, intending to just Teather whenever I was out and about, however having done it fine, paired perfectly, connected to psn fine, browse the web fine, the only thing I can't do is use the 'near' feature, it says some bs about not being able to obtain location data.
Any ideas anyone??

This error has nothing to do with your hot-spot.. I get this same error on my Wifi connection..
It has never worked for me and i think alot of people get it.

I don't have an iphone to be sure, but I do know that the vita will not connect to a WiFi that's in AD-HOC mode. iPhone's default hotspot probably uses AD-HOC mode, as do most Android tethering apps.

I finally got my Android phone to work using a tether app that wasn't available on the market, and then spending 10 minutes messing around with options till I finally found a wifi driver in it that worked for my phone... and even then the connection is wonky at the best of times.

If you want to be sure whether your phone's wifi is ad-hoc or not, it's pretty easy to do if you have a PC or laptop with a wifi connection, simply look for it on your list of available connections, right click and select status/properties (depending if you're on windows/linux/MacOS/etc) and it should list it as either AD-HOC (bad) or infrastructure (good).

By the by, it's not only the Vita with this limitation. 3DS, Wii, and PS3 also have these same limitations.

I just got the same error while tethered to my iphone. However I also occasionally get the same error on my home wi-fi so it's not just a tethering issue.

I was pretty sure when you are in WiFi, Near collects your location data based on your IP address right?

So naturally if you're connected to a 3G hotspot like your phone, you wouldn't be able to obtain location data from ur IP?

I'm just throwing a wild guess here by the way.

EDIT: I looked up on Google, and this is what the playstation site has to say XD

...Location data is obtained by using Wi-Fi location service. To obtain location data using Wi-Fi information, an Internet connection is required in the Wi-Fi location service area.
http://www.skyhookwireless.com/location ... verage.php
In the "Address lookup" field, try to enter a post code from the region in which you want to obtain location information.
You cannot obtain location data outside of the service area.
For Wi-Fi positioning in location data information, the PS Vita system uses Skyhook's method of obtaining location data. Skyhook's Wi-Fi location service enables a location to be obtained by linking "access points" and "access point locations," which are registered in Skyhook's database. Any access point for which the MAC address is known such as one for an individual residence can be registered in the database.

I have no problems tethering my vita to my iphone. It may be a carrier issue for you?
Near also works and provides location data.

Hi

I own a iphone 3GS, and it only support AD-HOC hotspot with cydia apps like mywi and pdanet.

My iphone also have a build-in(no cydia) option to share internet thru bluetooth.
But when i connect my iphone bluetooth to psvita. The vita recognize the iphone as a audio device not as a internet modem....

do you guys have any ideia about what i can do to vita see my iphone as modem?

I think the only way to have my iphone internet to psvita is to buy some kind of pocket wifi repeater.
But I only found big ones and expansive(more than 100USD)....

Do you guys know what is the cheapest cellphone that support 3G and infrastructure wifi internet sharing?

I had an issue connecting to my iPhone's hot spot. My phone's name was Thumper's iPhone. I thought maybe its the characters associated with the phone's name that we're affecting it. I changed it to Thumper and now it's working with no issue. Give that a try if you haven't already found a solution and see what happens.

Cheers and good luck!
