Postby Sam A56 » Wed Feb 29, 2012 2:23 am

okay so, im no programmer but i think the vita web browser is open source. now correct me if i am wrong but isn't open source mean the source code is openly available to the public for download? and if this is the case then couldn't we just re/program the browser and install it to the vita? i mean sony did allow download of their sdk for it so if any one has it and thinks they can do the above-mentioned task then please do the youtube fanboy/girls a favor put atleast html5 into it please and thank you, Sam A56 P.S. typed on vita again

Yes, but you'd need a way to install it.

Also, i assume they didn't include it for performance reasons, which would still need to be dealt with.

Using open-source libraries doesn't necessarily mean the result product must be open-source. The PSP used libtiff and libpng iirc, which are both open-source, but no part of the firmware source code has ever been released officially.

And this is the main problem.

Parts of the browser source may be available online, but not full sources most likely and even if they were, and someone could compile it, as said above there is no way to install it. [The case is also the same for the 3DS - part of it's browser's source is available online, which prompts people to think "we can haz romz tru opan sauce brows3r!!!111!"; this is of course not the case]

In short: No. It won't happen, sorry.

There are quite a few open source licenses used in the making of the vita. Not as many as a ton of other stuff, but damn sony. get creative lol.

http://www.scei.co.jp/psvita-license/index.html

EDIT:
And the source code provided by Sony courtesy of the terms of the Mozilla Public License Version 1.1

http://www.scei.co.jp/psvita-license/cairo-1.10.2.zip

I think I'll play around with it and the PSS, just for the hell of it. Not like I'll get anything accomplished, but whatevs.

cairo? I bet this isn't hardware accelerated that's why the browser is slow. Well, a firmware update may fix that, but we're talking about Sony here and they have a pretty bad history when it comes to firmware changelog.

Sony, judging that the PS Vita is so unsure of itself, and can't decide to be a media player, or a game system, will almost definitely integrate html5 or flash into the browser. Think about it, they're competing with iPod, Android devices, phones, tablets, and Nintendo. They need it.
remember, remember the 5th of november
