What you need:
1. A 3DS,
2. A way to connect to the internet on your 3DS (wifi, Nintendo USB Connector, etc.),
3. A 3DS charger (not needed but recommended),
4. A Credit/Debit Card or Nintendo eShop card (not needed but useful if you want more than the default themes),
5. Patience (sometime the update can take a while with a slow internet connection),
6. Some spare time to do all of this.
Instructions:
1. Turn on your Nintendo 3DS and go into System Settings.
2. Click on Other Settings then click the arrow pointing to the right 3 times.
3. Click the following things on the touch screen, System Update, OK and I Accept.
4. At this point the 3DS will tell you to plug in the AC Adapter so do that then press OK.
5. The system will now connect to the internet and start updating. Once done the system will restart.
6. The home screen will now look a little different to before. Click on the picture of a house and a spanner in the top left corner.
7. Click onto Change theme and after a few seconds a list of currently installed themes will come up. At this point you will only have 6 (Simple Red, Simple Blue, Simple Yellow, Simple Pink, Simple Black and Default).
8. There will also be an option to click that say Theme Shop. Click on that and your 3DS will connect to the internet and access the theme shop.
9. There are a few options on the homepage of the theme shop, but if you want to see all currently available themes you should click on All Themes which is close to the bottom of the page.
10. After a few seconds to sign in a list of themes should come up on your 3DS. Choose a theme you like and you will come to a page telling you about it (I chose the Zelda one).
11. If you are sure you want to buy the theme you have chosen then click on Proceed to Purchase. This is where you will need some way to add credit to your 3DS unless you already have money on there.
12. Proceed through the purchase as if it was a game on the eShop.
13. Exit to the HOME Menu and click on the house with the spanner icon again.
14. Once more click Change Theme and this time when you get to the list of installed themes, you will see your newly bought theme. Select it and you will be sent back to the HOME Menu but it will now have a new background and new music.
15. If you want to share the fact that you have bought this new theme, you can take a screenshot by holding the Y button and pressing up to take a screenshot of the top screen and down to take a screenshot of the bottom screen.
Now you can share it to Facebook or Twitter using the Nintendo 3DS Image Share website. There is a link to it in the house and spanner icon.
