[Introduction]

Video files on xmb video column can display a small thumb clip of about 15 seconds from the file as preview.
By default the system creates it from the beginning of the video.
Videos registered to the xmb by applications usually do not get a thumbnail.

Creating it or changing it are the same procedure! :-)

[Procedure]
Select the video you would like to create or change the thumbnail for:

Play the video by pressing "X"-Button and pause ("X" again) at the position you would like to have the next 15 seconds as thumbnail for.
(Hint: "L2"-Button lets you rewind and "R2" fast forward.)

Now press Triangle-Button to display the control panel and select the icon, left to the trash-icon.

(Marked red = Thumbnail creation Icon)

It will now ask you to confirm picking 15 seconds at the beginning of this scene as Icon:

If one is already set, it will overwrite. Once you confirm it, it will process the creation of the icon:

The icon has been changed!

Thats it! Now you can exit the video playback (by pressing "O"-Button) and enjoy the changed clip:

[Bonus]

Press Square-Button in playback mode of the video to make a scene gallery appear:

D-Pad Up/Down lets you select intervals of 2 minutes/1 minute/30 seconds/15 seconds:

Selecting, preview the scene in the small thumb and press X-Button to jump to the scene as playback.

I hope you enjoyed this piece of information and have much fun with it as i do!
/greetz mysis :-)

Notes from Sony:
* Depending on the video file, it may not be possible to change the icon.
* A video file shorter than two seconds cannot be used as an icon.

Not disputing that it may be informative to someone, but there is rules and i have jumped on others about entries entered. So just because mysis is a talented developer that is very well respected. I do not think i should not share my opinion when i feel that it also does not qualify. If i did not share my opinion then that would not be right for me to do. So its nothing against mysis at all (he should win based on all his contributions (but that is not the contest)) just looking at the rules that are outline and seeing it's an official option that is discussed in the official PS3 docs.

Can one really consider this new? and changed enough to be considered something different. Rewrite of an official feature outlined in official docs and throughout the net at many places discussed is not my personal idea of "original content and not previously published on other sites" , If "submitting a previously posted tutorial it will need to have significant updates to qualify"..

Informative YES .. A good TuT for a contest that wants something new and unique; NO ... Sorry mysis just have to share my opinions (as i have with other entries). Thanks for all your many contributions.

P.S. -- Since i am always complaining it seems about this contest i will provide something something since its related to this subject. instead of a rant.

While the video thumbnails are great. if one would like to have movie covers or any image instead of the video icons, that is possible as well. You can do this easily (very quick and sloppy run through).
/dev_hddo0/videos/..../ .MTH / .STH files (i think those are the extensions). Replacing those files with an image (.jpg) that is 250x200 (i think were the dimension that worked best (been a few years since i done this lol so if you do this you may have to play with dimensions of the image a bit) ... but simply rename the .JPG image and rename it to the same names and extension as your .MTH and .STH files your replacing.. Now you should see images on your Videos on the XMB instead of the video icon..
