This tutorial will guide and teach you how to access and open or play all your media files that are on your PC from your PS3 without copying them to the PS3. This including all your media files like photos, music, videos, movies ...

You will need :
-Your PC
-Your PS3
-An internet connexion
-Windows Media Player 11

1)To begin, you should have an ADSL router or be connected via the network card of your PC. If this is not the case, unfortunately, you will not be able to do this operation because you have to have your console and your computer connected to the internet at the same time.

2)Open Windows Media Player 11 and click on Tools then Options. Then click on the Library tab, and in the "Media Sharing" click "configure sharing".

3)A dialog box opens and once inside, check the box share my media files. An unknown mobile device will be detected, this is your playstation 3.

If this is not the case, we will have to search it. Go to your Playstation 3, in "settings" then "Network Settings" and finally "connecting to the media server", then choose "activate". A new icon will appear, "Search for Media Servers", click it and wait until it finds your PC.

The icon will appear on Windows Media Player, click "Allow".

4)Now that your Playstation 3 and PC communicate with each other, you just need to select the files you want to be shared.

To do this, in the library tab, click "Scan Folders".

5)A new dialog box opens, select the "My folders and those to which I can access", then click "Add" to add folders that contain your photos, videos and music.

6)Last step, you need to configure your gaming console. It's very simple, go to "Settings" and start a "search for Media Servers". Playstation then will scan and find your PC.

You are now connected, and you can enjoy all your files.

you can used dlna to connect via media server settings

ps3 server dose this and will convert non supported video formats to a supported one on the fly,
plus it works with just about any device with dlna support like most network compatible tvs
dlna isn't supported on win xp and older though, just wasn't designed for it
