[Tutorial] create a neat Exchange-Folder

Post by ind3x-gosu » Mon Feb 16, 2015 12:23 pm

Hey guys, just wanted to share how I create my Exchange-Folder.
(the Savegame-Folder I use to transfer Homebrew and all the other Stuff to and from my Vita)
Note: This is only for those of you who care about a nice look, you can use unmodified safes of course.

1. Get a Base-Savegame
Get a Savegame to use as base, this can be any PSP/PS1 savegame.
Copy it anywhere (so you don't mess up the actual save)
I'll use GRANDIA / SLES02399 for this Tutorial.

2. Delete Stuff
There are only 3 Files you need in your Exchange-Folder
(because it won't transfer if those Files are not present)
- ICON0.PNG
- CONFIG.BIN
- PARAM.SFO
So delete all Files except these ones.

3. Create a custom Icon (or use one of mine)
Rules for the Icons that can be used:
- exact name: ICON0.PNG
- Filetype: PNG
- Resolution: either 80x80 (PS1 Style) or 144x80 (PSP Style)
- no transparency (?)

Replace the original-ICON0.PNG with your custom one.

4. rename the Save-Folder
For your GameID being changed in PSP Filer and on your PC,
just rename the Folder itself to whatever you want, following these rules:

It has to start with one of these 4-Char-Strings...

SCUS - 1st party US PSX or PS2 game
SLUS - 3rd party US PSX or PS2 game
UCUS - 1st party US PSP game
ULUS - 3rd party US PSP game
-------------------------------------------------
SCES - 1st party EU PSX or PS2 game
SLES - 3rd party EU PSX or PS2 game
-------------------------------------------------
SCPS - 1st party JAP PSX or PS2 game
SLPS - 1st party JAP PSX or PS2 game
ULJS - 3rd party JAP PSP game
(Source: http://www.mobygames.com/info/product-codes?nof=1)

...and has to end with 5 numbers.

I chose SLES00000 because it is easy to spot for me.

5. Edit the PARAM.SFO-File
This is the main-part of this Tutorial.
Open up the PARAM.SFO-File in your favourite HEX-Editor,
if you don't know wich one to use, I recommend DF HEXEditor, because it shows you the Filesize,
this is kinda important because the Filesize has to remain the same after editing.
Note the Filesize if you can't memorize it.

5.2 Search and edit the GameName
Search the Name of your BaseGame (in this case GRANDIA). If you use DF HEXEditor, press F2 (EditMode)
then edit the GameName-String to something that is easy to remember for you,
I chose EXCHANGE.

If the new name is not exactly as long as the BaseName of your save,
you either have to remove or add 00 (Zeros) ON THE LEFT SIDE of the screen
until the Filesize is the same as before you edited anything.

Save the PARAM.SFO-File and you are done.

You don't have to edit the game ID, you can name it to [Exchange Folder] and when you open it up in PSP Filer, it'll say that exact string.

Props for giving people a download link so they can just skip all the work.

I don't know what you mean, when I rename my folder to EXCHANGE, i can't copy it anymore.
I am pretty sure the Folder will only be copied when it followes the Name-Rules of Step 4.1.
And if I don't rename the FolderName, nothing changes in PSP Filer.
The only thing that changes is the Name in the Content Manager, I guess you meant that.

However I thought that the GameID in the Folder-Name and in the PARAM.SFO have to match, but they don't actually have to.
Edited above.

I'll upload my folder soon. It'll keep the folder name when transferred and you'll see in it PSP Filer. Give me 4 hours. I'm at school :3
Are you using CMA or QCMA?

Well, this one works fine for me too, kind of strange.
I guess I'll have to dig a little bit deeper here why...

Thank you, this is awesome :) Finally even easier to spot the copy folder.

EDIT: I am not 100% sure at this, but I guess my mistake was this:
I was using SLES < (PSX Game Prefix) and searched your folder there,
But every Folder that is not specified per Folder Name (like SLES00000) is automatically
assumed to be a PSP-Game, so I could not find it in the PSX Games - Section in the Content Manager

EDIT2: Will update the Tutorial when I'm back at home.

EDIT2: I can't transfer your Folder back to my PC, transfer PC -> Vita works fine, Vita -> PC does not!
May not be that important for some, but I like my exchange to work bothh ways.

Btw: I use QCMA (only choice, operating on Linux :D)
