How to stream videos, photos and music to the PSVita

Post by JCK07115 » Mon Jul 07, 2014 9:03 am

In this tutorial, I will be using Plex to show how one can access most of one's files on the ps vita. Plex is a website (server) onto which you can upload your files and access them from any other device connected to your local network. You simply have to access the files using the ip address of the device registered with Plex. Plex is free and you do not need to create an account to use it. Please follow the steps listed below:

1) Download the Plex application and install it on your computer - https://plex.tv/downloads
You will need to launch the installed Plex Media Client (program) each time you want to access your media on any of your devices (tablets, smartphones, [smart] tv and obviously your PSVita)

2) Follow this link: https://plex.tv/users/sign_in
If you want to create an account with Plex, select the option, "Don't have an account yet?". Set up and verify your account by following the onscreen instructions. When you are done follow this link, 127.0.0.1:32400/web, and you will be led to the Plex webpage where you can add your videos, music and photos. You can also add channels featured on Plex like YouTube, CollegeHumor, Dailymotion and PBS, to mention a few.

On the other hand if you do not wish to create an account with Plex, select the option, "Don't want an account?". You will be taken straight to the Plex webpage where you can add your photo, music and photos as well as channels featured on Plex like YouTube, CollegeHumor, Dailymotion and PBS.

After setting up your libraries and channels on Plex, anytime you launch the application, you will be taken to the Plex site where you will find all your items.

3) Find your private or local IP address.
For Mac users follow these instructions to find your local IP address. Click the Apple logo at the utmost top left hand corner of your Mac device and select the "System Preferences" menu. A Window should appear showing all of your settings. Select the "Network" menu. The network menu should appear and at the left should be a list of various cellular networks and connections including your Wi-Fi, Samsung Android and Bluetooth connection. Under the Wi-Fi pane should be an "Advanced..." menu at the bottom, select it. Under the TCP/IP pane should be your IPv4 address which is your local address, the one assigned to your computer by your network.
For Windows users, simply press the home button, search for and open command prompt. Type in "ipconfig", without the quotation marks. Beside the label IPv4 address should be your IP address.

4) Launch your PS Vita's web browser.
In the address bar of your Vita's web browser, type in the ip address of your computer followed by ":32400/web", without the quotes. The Plex webpage registered to your computer's IP address should open up and you should now have access to all the files you uploaded onto the Plex server via your computer.

LIMITATIONS TO USING PLEX ON THE VITA:
- Your music must be in the .mp3/AAC 2 format
- Your videos must be in the .mp4 format and must have a quality of 720p or lower.

NOTE: You always have to launch the Plex application you installed on your PC/Mac before trying to access your media on any of your devices otherwise, you will get an error saying that the server cannot be reached.

Credits:
-Wololo for the initial tutorial on PLEX via the PS4
-Forum user, psvita, for the details on file types/formats
-Forum users, Chris.beanz and reprep, for the support and helpful criticism

I hope this tutorial was helpful. Thanks for taking the time to read it.

Yes, you are right. I was going to add the main issue I had encountered which was the .mp4 extension. I should probably add all of these to the prerequisites of this tutorial working for people. Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I cannot alter the Vita in any way as to allow for media with these attributes to work. I am not sure if the console verion of Plex also limits the kind of media you can play.

content manager asistant lets you stream .mp4 videos to your vita, no need for an external application. just choose wireless while connecting to cma and you are done.

i have streamed 1080p content without problem.

That is why there are alternatives/several ways to kill a bird, that was why the application was made, not necessarily with the Vita alone in mind. But great, it works on the Vita so anyone can use it. Go troll somewhere else please. Thanks for the info about streaming via CMA but that itself makes use of both CMA on your PC/Mac and on your Vita which falls under the set of external applications. Plex is accessed via your Vita's browser, an internal app.

troll? are you for real?

my answer was to "psvita" who asked for help and that is what i gave him.

i didn't bad mouth PLEX, heck i didn't even mention PLEX once.

alternatives are good but not non-working ones with the supporters who go out of their ways to mindlessly defend them.

When next you are responding specifically to someone in a thread, more specifically a tutorial section, you use the "Quote" button and not the "Quick Reply" so everyone knows you are not generalizing but rather speaking to a particular person. Secondly, you said, "I didn't even mention PLEX once." Oh! But you implied it. In your Original Post, you said, "no need for an external application" and based on my "knowledge", this is a tutorial for PLEX so what else could you have been referring to in this case study. And what do you mean by "non-working ones with the supporters who go out of their way to mindlessly defend them?" Plex works and it was built with other devices in mind. Heck, there is not even an app allocated for the Vita, the server unto which you upload your media is directly accessed on the Vita's interface (browser) hence, all the limitations such as video extensions. It works and I am not mindlessly defending it, I have used it in all possible scenarios on the Vita. I became interested after wololo's tuto on how to use Plex on the PS4. I instantly tried it on my Vita and several other Vita users confirmed that it works so I doubt it is a "non-working" alternative.
I did not mean to ever offend but always ensure that you do not entangle yourself in situations like this.

it was very clear whom i referred to.

if you didn't mean to offend, your selection of words such as "troll" doesn't help much, does it? you could easily specify the limitations of PLEX and let the users choose the best alternative, instead of accusing me.

anyways, it is great if it works, if not you can always use CMA.

PLEX might be great in PS4 as it has no built-in DLNA support or a way to stream photos, music, video etc. in vita you have a way to do so, it doesn't need external application (i assume you already have CMA installed on your pc/mac) and works good. and it is not trolling to point this fact.

First, it wasn't clear who you were referring to initially. It could have very well been me or psvita, the only other person in this thread. And when I said I didn't mean to offend I meant in the sense that you don't get offended when you are referred to by what you are. What did you want me to imply from your post? It seemed like you were trying to "discredit" my tutorial and I am one who is somewhat overprotective. And words have different implications. Sorry for calling you a troll, although an earlier part of my response might imply otherwise. I think we should be friends haha ;)

P.S. USE THE QUOTE FUNCTION SO ANYONE KNOWS WHO YOU ARE RESPONDING TO
