PS Vita Battery mod for Wifi Version only

Post by decookaaron » Fri Aug 30, 2013 3:57 am

Imma post pics on my battery mod and what I used to do it. And google ps vita disassembly tutorial. I will post some pics one by one to gather everything together. This will be my second PS Vita Battery mod. The longest it ever lasted with a single charge while playing killzone beta with brightness turned all the way up. Is 5 hours. Movies lasted me 6.5 hours. If you have any questions just message me or post on here.

Things needed

A New PSP 3000 series battery. (3.7v 1200mAh)
Small neddle nose pliers.
Sandpaper.
Red and Black Wires.
Wire strippers.
Solder.
Tape.
And patients.
The attachment 2013-08-28-221120.jpg is no longer available
I used needle nose pliers to break these parts off to make room for the PSP battery. Google on PSP battery disassembly. And cut the logic board off of the PSP battery.

Then I fitted the psp battery to make sure it fits nice and snugged. I took the PS Vita battery out and cut the Red and Black wires only. And took some red and Black wire I bought from radioshack and matched the color and soldered them and wrapped the wires in green electrical tape. Then I took the psp battery and Matched the red with the positive and Black with the negative and Folded the metal flaps over and drop some solder in the flaps and let it melt. Then I taped them with the same green tape and made sure the battery still fit in the spot.

I re-assemble everything to see if it fits. And if you did it right it fits perfect. Then you can and test it out. I never had a problem yet. But just double check everything. Imma do a 4 battery mod on. it I will post pics when I order batteries.

I have 4 PSVs diff regions, 4 PS3s diff models+2 dead ones, 1 Xbox360+5 dead ones, 4 xboxs diff models+2 dead ones, 4 ps2s diff models, and had 18 psps diff models and regions. All modded except the PSVs. I'm a console collector and repair man. :)

It wouldn't let me post some .jpg file saying invalid file. Or something like that. So I couldnt post all the pics and I didn't feel like taking my vita all apart again to retake pictures. I will make a video on my next battery mod.

Maybe you'll for example post the pics to dropbox (or other hosting), then copy direct links to the images and place them in the post using the "Img" tag?

For sure. I did another battery mod but added more then one battery this time. I had to break peaces off. But it works. And worth it. :)

Is there any chance of after doing this will cause both of them to expand and get unfair charges and discharges?
It's bad to fully discharge a lithium ion battery, but with both of these connected, wouldn't that confuse the vita battery monitor? I'm just a little concerned about things like this. So how has your vita been doing with these added batteries?

This mod looks really cool, I'm gonna get a 3600mah psp slim battery; after all it's the same physical size as the 1200mah.
So how can you fit more than one battery in that confined space, snap plastic shields off?
This is awesome; didn't know it was this simple. Nice discovery!

Please could you explain just a little more information about the wiring, as it got a little confusing in places, such as cutting red and black, then connecting green and white? Sorry, didn't quite make sense

So you cut the vita's red and black wires, leaving white and green wires attached to the mobo connector, then you join red vita battery wire to your red psp wire (which you solder on) and do the same with black? Thanks

To add more batteries i broke of the plastic slabs so that more then one battery can fit.
And 2 the battery monitor that are on all electronics only monitor the input and output of the voltage that's going on. If all batteries are 3.7volts then connected negative with negative and positive with positive it will remain 3.7volts without confusing anything. And black wire with negative and red wire with positive and leave white wire alone. That's its a pretty simple mod, I did it with my PSP Phat, by removing the UMD drive and then place one big 3.7volt battery. Its been good, I had no problems since the mods, look at the post date and today's date, that's how long I had it running since the mod, I have a lot of games systems to mess with so i always have a back up.

Thanks for explaining, I understand now. There are 3 wires from the vita battery, the white one is the monitor wire and red and black, positive negitive. Remove the psp battery PCB board, solder on positive and negative wires onto the psp battery, then join them to the black and red vita wires, leaving white attached to the mobo connector. Thanks again, very helpful!

One other thing that I noticed is that every psp slim battery I come across on eBay, third party or genuine are all 3.6v. You mention adding 3.7, but is that one digit an issue?
I would have thought not, due to it working with you so far.
The vita battery to my understanding is 3.7, but the psp battery is 3.6, surely the difference in -0.1 has no negative results.

When connecting the psp battery to the vita's, do you put the vita's red wire to the PSP's red wire, then the black wire to the vita mobo connector?
It's difficult to explain. You can't just connect the red wire to the red and black to black, otherwise that's 2 connected batteries and it's not connected to the motherboard. So to connect the two batteries together and connect them to the motherboard, do you have to strip the ps vita's red & black (not cut) then add a wire onto red and black while the vita's battery is still connected to the mobo?

How do you connect the psp battery to the vita battery, and then the motherboard connector?
Do you have to cut the vita battery's red and black, and connect one to the connector? It would be easier to understand with a picture, but I can't find any that match what I'm trying to say, and I can't upload any either.
Sorry for being a noob.

What I did is cut the PS Vita red and black wires and got some extra wire for the PSP battery and soldered wires to the PSP battery and then soldered the 3 exposed wires together. So there should be like a three way. And I haven't had an issue with the PS Vita Battery mod since I did it.

Alright, thanks. Think I got it now, I'll have a go and when (if) everything works, I'll post a detailed wire guide perhaps.
