HDMI Concerns

Post by praed0r » Sun Dec 01, 2013 11:54 pm

Had some problems with HDMI video output continually going off then back on again - sound was'nt affected - just video.

It would start about 30 mins after powering up, every 10 mins or so, then gradually increasing in frequency till the game was unplayable.

Did a spot of Googling and came to the conclusion I probably had a bad cable - so I swapped it out for the new one that came with the console, this is where I really became concerned, the HDMI plug at the console end was so hot it was verging on being painful to hold and the first few inches of the cable were also very hot and very supple.

Replacing the cable seemed to solve the original problem but the cable is still heating up way more than I am happy with, I'm concerned that it may go up in flames, so I'm contemplating taking it back and asking for a replacement.

Has anyone else had this problem ?

I would call Sony asap. I don't think the HDMI port should get that hot...

Faulty PS4 HDMI port is faulty. Cable shouldn't be melting.

Actually, your fear is about to get a lot worse, or anger that is, you'll most likely have to send it into Sony for repair and I think they have like a 2-3 week turnaround time last I heard. And that doesn't include shipping time... Sorry man, that's a bummer. :/

Is that truly the case? Because it's completely absurd to buy a defective unit for the new price, and then be stuck with a 3-week-delayed repaired unit for the price of a new unit. Stores should have to risk eating the cost for newly released items with flaws; it's not like they're going to choose to not carry these items, and they obviously can't charge more than competitors since they'll lose all business.

I really think companies should be required to risk some fraudulent returns with newly released items, since it's inevitable that a certain percentage will have problems and they shouldn't inconvenience their customers due to poor quality control or fears of fraud.

You can return it to the store, thing is you won't be getting a new one back, just your money... They are sold out everywhere that's why the turn around is so high, nobody is returning them, cause they can't replace it, so you either have to wait for Sony to fix it, or wait until new stock comes in, and man, unless you wanna fight people, literally, you probably won't see them on store shelves until after Xmas...

Ohhh, of course. I thought it seemed weird, although I'm sure there are some stores that would still give you a hard time with such a strange problem. It seems unlikely you'd be able to break the device yourself in such a way as to cause it to overheat the HDMI port while still functioning properly otherwise.

It would depend on the store really, honestly if you return it any store would probably take it back so one of their employees could buy it and send it in for repairs, and have themselves a PS4... ;)

Take it back immediately, you cannot seriously believe that this is the intended mode of operation!
Companies today are über careful to avoid potential lawsuits due to any kind of failure, especially those which could cause physical harm.
