OrbisOS: PS4 OS is a FreeBSD
Re: OrbisOS: PS4 OS is a FreeBSD
I hope it means that I can just buy a retail PS4 and it will let me say for example use Unity to make a game ^__^

Re: OrbisOS: PS4 OS is a FreeBSD
That would be amazing. I mean, the PS4 is a PC. Why not develop the games directly from the console itself?fate6 wrote:I hope it means that I can just buy a retail PS4 and it will let me say for example use Unity to make a game ^__^

GRUB is probably best boot loader as for now.Xian Nox wrote:why they used GRUB2 in the devkits at all
Right!Xian Nox wrote:'they just did because that's the first thing that came to the dev's mind'
Any case that involves a GPL violation by a medium-big company.Xian Nox wrote:And speaking of the FSF, in what cases can they take action?
LILO (LInux LOader) is deprecated since long ago.Xian Nox wrote:Both boot0 and LILO
From a programmer point of view, given a POSIX OS and libc, there's no need to even know what architecture the machine is running. So no, choosing a PC architecture was not to make development easier. It was to make multi-platform games easier (since now XBoX PS4 and PC have the same architecture).JeoWay wrote: I think that is a reason for the nice PC Architecture (other than the fact of giving developers a easier platform to develop for)
Sony says a lot of things. I hope you're right, but for me, this is BS talk from Sony as usual.Acid_Snake wrote:they did mention self publishing for indie devs
Again, PC architecture has nothing to do with this. PSVita has an indie (basic) SDK while big developers have an advanced SDK. Most likely this is going to be the scheme for PS4.JeoWay wrote:I wonder if the PS4 can be used to make games and run them due to the pc architecture.
I think you will need Sony software to make games for the PS4.fate6 wrote:it will let me say for example use Unity to make a game ^__^

no, a PC is a PC, the PS4 is a consoleJeoWay wrote:the PS4 is a PC
not true at all, taking full advantage of the PS3 meant using the Cell BE at its fullest, and that was VERY hard and required assemblym0skit0 wrote:choosing a PC architecture was not to make development easier
my guess is they won't make an otherOS, or free distributable homebrew market like the PSP, they will want to get some money out of it, and they will be paranoid as they always are about piracy, so my guess is that it'll be like PSM: games will run on a very limited environment, only one language will be available, and there will be a yearly fee that will make devs backtrack like on the vita.m0skit0 wrote:Sony says a lot of things. Everything we use, Computers, Cell phones, Gaming Devices, handhelds.Acid_Snake wrote:no, a PC is a PC, the PS4 is a console
Think about it, the word "console" doesn't make any sense. Everything we use is a PC in its own form.
Think, these devices have, gaming capabilities, browsers, Processors, Graphics cards, power supplys, screens, an operating system, keyboard/controller, sound, display, etc.
The word "console" just refers to a platform that is meant to play games. heck, put the ps4's processors, gpu, hdd, etc inside your current PC and now I guess your PC is called a console now
P.S - Not trying to start something, i'm just stating what our devices really are. Not what people what to fight about

phones are phones, consoles are consoles, PCs are PCs. They are very different. You are messing up the term PC with computer technologyJeoWay wrote:Think about it, the word "console" doesn't make any sense. Everything we use is a PC in its own form.

I won't facepalm on your lack of knowledge, I will facepalm on your assumption that you know more than a computer engineer studentJeoWay wrote:*facepalm*Acid_Snake wrote:phones are phones, consoles are consoles, PCs are PCs. What I'm saying is, its a pc in its own way. They all do something a pc does.
Kind of like how they say a tablet is like a PC. Well, same thing

Re: OrbisOS: PS4 OS is a FreeBSD
look bro, PC means Personal Computer, and in computing it's defined as a generic, general-purpose device that can be anything the developer and user decides to use it for. A console is NOT a general-purpose device, it's top most priority is playing games, while everything else is secondary and some developers don't add anything to it, or don't allow for other functionality than the one it was built for. Same goes for phones, their main objective is for people to communicate (even if they can do more than that, the rest is just added bonus), and MP3 player's main objective is to play music. Tablets are indeed more like PCs, they have general-purpose and generic functionality in mind. I understand your point, but it's flawed due to your general lack of computer knowledge, computer history, von-newman and other important stuff a person should know before talking about computers at all.JeoWay wrote:What I'm saying is, its a pc in its own way.
