Well all we have right now is rumored specs, so until the official PS4 specs are announced we wont know how powerful it is or if its capable.

I think that it will be something like ps2 emulation on earlier ps3 versions, they will just add another motherboard to it to guarantee 100% compatibility for ps3 and about ps2 emu I think that with so much power it can be easily done by sony

so the ps3 on pc thing is still far off for the random devs, sony on the other hand can do it fairly fast if they wanted, they have all the know how for it anyway
Even though Sony knows more about its own console than "random devs", I'm completely sure Sony won't be able to come out with a PS3 emulator for the PS4 (at least in its prime)...and when (if) it does, then compatibility will be pretty sh*tty.

Yeah and the PS4 will cost 800$ with that, that's the sole reason "Sony" cut of hardware emulation of PS2 in PS3 cause the production cost was to high.

Sony will try to con you so it won't be backwards compatible. What I mean by this is that they'll do what they did with the Playstation Vita and make you have to rebuy your game just so you can play it on their console.

But, there's no difference (if you're talking about physical PS3 games vs digital) because both would still require hardware/software (respectively) to emulate them on the PS4.

If they continue the pattern they have been doing over the past years, the first models will most likely be compatible with a few PS3 games, and future models won't be compatible at all.
-PSP 3000 (03g): 6.61 PRO-C2
-PSP go (05g): 6.61 PRO-C2
-PCH [PS VITA] 1001: OFW 3.XX

The launch PS3's were backwards compatible with PS2 games because they had the Emotion Engine in them. If Sony was to put the Cell inside the PS4, then the price of the PS4 would jump about $150.

even if it's possible, sony won't put BC on the ps4 simply because they will still sell ps3 systems after they launch the ps4. It will be only after they stop ps3 production that they might consider a ps3 emulator, and even so it will most likely be like ps2 emulation on the ps3: exclusive to psn bought games
