After many attemps I have finally succeded at making a few backups of the OFW :). I checked them with NorInspector001, PS3 NOR/NAND Statistic and with the PS3 Flash Tool itself.

All of the programs said that there were no errors, but the percentage of 00's in PS3 NOR/NAND Statistic is in the red (18,17%). All of my dump have that percentage so maybe it's still OK?

I decided to follow the that german guide because I can't find any other up to date guides.

There is one thing i'm not certain about. Point 2.3.5 in the guide:

eSATA Station ausschalten oder das eSATA Kabel ziehen. (off Station eSATA or the eSATA cable pull. in google translate).

Does that mean I should have the harddrive disconnected when flashing?

Also what does these things mean:

*** Hinweis 1: dieser Punkt ist für das benutzen des FLASH FUN Mode zum entbricken notwendig ***

falls ihr ein älteres Backup mit dem PS3 Flash Tool v4.65 benutzt habt, drückt ihr die "PS" Taste und dann "START" + "SELECT" auf eurem Playstation 3 Controller beim Starten der Playstation 3
Schritt 2.3.17. bis 2.3.19. dürft ihr somit überspringen !!!

Google translate can't make sense of it.

About the NOR/NAND Statistic, i can't give any advice. When i downgraded my PS3 i think i had "everything green" without realy knowing what each value means.

I also didn't use an eSata station, so i can't realy share any experience with that aswell.

What i can do, is translate the texts for you:

Code: Select all

2.3.5

Turn off the eSata station or pull the eSata cable.
Since i didnt use an eSata station at all, and i had the E3 connected to the Sata port, i definitely did this without an hdd! So yeah, just turn it of / pull the cable until your asked to turn it on/connect again.

Here is the translation of the last part:

Code: Select all

*** Notice 1: this step is necessary if you have to use FLASH FUN mode to unbrick the flash ***

if you have used an older backup with the PS3 Flash Tool v4.65, press the PS button and then "Start + Select" on your controller when starting the PS3.
Thus you can skip step 2.3.17 to 2.3.19 .

So this is not important for you (as long as you don't brick you flash during the process)

Hope that helped to overcome the confusion :)
Happy flashing

So I went ahead and flashed the PS3. It went well.

I then tried to install HABIB 4.65 CEX 1.01. But about half-way thorugh I got an error:

An error occured during the update operation.
Restart the system and perform the update again.
(8002F14E)

I googled the error code and found out that I have to have the blu-ray drive connected (I did not have it connected).

So my question now is. Is it necessary to have the E3 flasher connected at this point or can I remove it?

I currently have the board just lying on my table on top of the psu and a book (I did this to be able to put extra pressure on the clip by hand).

If I put it together again I can connect the blu-ray drive.

I can't have both the e3-flasher and my harddrive connected at the same time when the ps3 is put together because only one of them fit in the harddrive bay and my e-sata station does not work for some reason.

I think i ran into the exact same problem. I think the guide didn't make this clear enough. (i would have told you this earlier, but unfortunately i didN#t remember )

So, after you you flashed the patched backup back to the NOR, the E3 Flasher can be disconnected and is not needed for the further steps. (unless you want to use dual boot, where the E3 has to be permanently installed. Again, i did not use this feature, so i can't really give any advice about this)

Also, after i installed 3.55 Rogero Downgrader RSOD, ran the toggle_qa.pkg and set System update debug to "on", i had to install Rogero CEX-3.55 CFW V3.7 and then OFW 3.55 before i was able to install the CFW of my choice.
(the guide doesn't say that you have to install OFW 3.55, but somehow it was needed for me to proceed.)

I managed to get HABIB 4.65 CEX 1.01 installed. :D

I then continued with installing 3.55 Rogero Downgrader RSOD and installed toggle_qa.

I then downloaded and installed Rogero CFW V3.7 CEX 3.55 from the links in the guide. The installation succeded, but the version is now 4.25 not 3.55. Which is kinda odd. But maybe that is the reason you had to install OFW in order to install another CFW.

Anyway, the process for installing OFW is the same as the one I used for installing Rogero CFW V3.7 CEX 3.55 (4.25) and for any other CFW, right?

Yes, just install OFW 3.55 through XMB just like you did with the CFWs.
i also always check the box to "install the Firmware to HDD" because somehow it prevented problems that i had without checking it.
(Once the update is installed, you can delete those update files from the same menu in XMB)

The Rogero V3.7 CEX 3.55 showing 4.25 is something i never noticed when i downgraded.
If you have problems installing the OFW 3.55, just try installing your CFW of choice directly over your current Rogero CFW.

However, now that you are on CFW everything else should be a walk in the park.
Glad everything worked out well so far

@razorbacktrack
Recommending to install the linker to someone that can't figure out how to install the clip is not very wise considering the soldering involved IMO
