Questions about the E3 Flasher

Post by christoffer88 » Fri Oct 10, 2014 10:01 pm

Hello,

I recently aquired a PS3 fat (CECHL04) and an E3 flasher and I am in the process of downgrading from OFW 4.65.

I have a couple of questions.

1 - Which way should I put the ribbon cable clip on? Is it the same way for all models.

2 - In this guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwJrw9ZFoOI at around 10 and half minutes in, the guy uses somekind of tool (don't know what it is called in english) to put pressure on the clip. Is that necessary or could I just use tape?

3 - I've found a couple of Flash Tools for 4.65 on this page http://www.ps3news.com/ps3-hacks-jailbr ... -released/. I downloaded the PS3 Flash Tool 4.65 update1 unofficial.zip one, but there seems to be other ones aswell. Which one should I use?

4 - Do I have to have the blu-ray drive connected while I'm using the flasher?

I recommend you to use the e3 linker ,not the clip

That would require soldering, right?

I'm not very good at soldering so I think I'll stick with the just using the clip.

i tried to use tape to put pressure on the clip, but it never really worked. In the end i tried it without tape and got lucky. but then i had to make sure that i don't move the parts even a tiny bit through the hole process. I would say, just be patient and try over and over again. until it works. I guess a screw clamp could help, but of course you have to make sure that you don't damage anything.

Regarding Flash Tool, the guide i used (when 4.60 was the newest OFW) got updated and now recomments PS3 Flash Tool v4.65 build 416 together with Custom Firmware HABIB CEX-4.65 CFW v1.01

I can also link you the complete guide, but it's in german. Not sure how helpfull google translation is here, but see yourself.

Thanks for the links.

I think I will install REBUG 4.46.1 REX. But I can still use that Patch Tool, right?

I'm currently stuck at the e3 flasher update step. The first time I tried to update all but the last LED were lit and I got the message "Cannot start. The appropriate system storage was not found."

I tried another time and this time I only got the message. No LEDs were lit.

I tried starting the PS3 without the cover board and it still starts so i guess it's not bricked, but I'm not sure what to do now :(.

The HABIB CEX-4.65 CFW v1.01 i mentioned above is just for downgrading, once you're on 3.55 you can install whatever CFW you like.
I#m not sure if you can use any 4.65 CFW for the downgrading process, so i would recomment to use the one i mentioned together with the Flash tool i mentioned, or to use flash tool/CFW that is recommented in whatever guide you use.

Here's what "my" guide sais about e3 flasher update (using microSD card):

1. Shut down PS3
2. set the e3 flasher's dip switches like this (green is what it's set to)
Image
3. copy the "update.bin" to a MicroSD card. Now put the MicroSD card into the e3 flashers MicroSD slot.
4. turn on your Playstation 3
5. the update start automatically, when all 8 LEDs light up, it was successfull

Sounds to me, like you did everything right, since all 8 LED were lit the first time you did it.
The message you got is due to the fact that your hdd was not connected. The e3 Flasher can't output messages this way,
it only has it's LEDs to "communicate" with you.
Also, for this step we just needed the PS3 as power source, so don't be confused by the message.

Actually the last LED was not lit I think.

So it's ok to continue even though that message showed up?

Then, you might have to repeat this step. Iirc the LED act as status indicators. The more LEDs light up the further the ûpgrade proceded. When all LEDS are lit, the process is finished.
SMOKE recently linked an archive which contains the official E3 manuals, maybe you find more detailed information there:

So I went ahead and tried to make a backup. I noticed that when the LEDs were blinking to indicate that I could start making the backup, the last LED was not blinking.

It might be broken so that might be why it did not get lit in the update step.

I did however get an error code this time. The error I got is, according to this guide http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?p= ... post387811 caused by the clip not being properly seated.

I'm going to try again tomorrow and see if I'm more lucky then.

I actually do have the harddrive connected through the e-sata station. I think I read somewhere that it might be caused by the clip not being properly seated.

I'm going to try adding a piece of foam on top of the clip, so that when it is pressed against the metal it might put some more pressure on the clip.
