Considering buying a ps3. Looking for advice.

Post by Daniel_Davies85 » Fri Apr 25, 2014 4:31 pm

Hey guys,

I've got a little bit of spare cash at the moment and so I was thinking of treating myself to a PS3. I haven't really followed the PS3 scene so I'm massively out of the loop on what you can do with one.

I have a few questions which will make up my mind as to whether to buy one or not so here goes;

Just to add that I'm English so Im in the Pal region.

What's the deal with PSP/PSV on screen play? Is that literally what it says on the tin? You're able to play PSP games on the big screen via your PS3?

What is the difference between all the different sized consoles, aside from price, How much do they vary in size and is the hardware better or more reliable in the bigger or smaller ones?

Which models are backwards compatible?

(I'm an RPG/Adventure/FF Tactics game kinda guy) so,
Are there really that many games that I've missed out on by not having a PS3? I mean, I'm assuming the back catalogue by now will be pretty huge but I've got an Xbox360. Are there (m)any PS3 exclusives that I've missed out on that are amazing?

After a bit of searching the only ones I can see which interest me are:

Kingdom Hearts HD
The Last of Us (supposedly amazing)
Disgaea - Various numbers
Ni No Kuni
MHP3rd
FF X & X-2 (Though I could get these for Vita(If only I could find hard copies of both))

I'm just not really sure its worth my money for such a small selection of games.

Any information or input would be great,
Dan.

I really enjoy the Uncharted series and the God of War series which are PlayStation exclusives. Honestly, I bought my PS3 just to play those two series alone. They have great stories and excellent graphics. I'm a PlayStation Plus subscriber and I enjoy getting free games each month as one of the benefits. I've downloaded just about every free game available for my PS Vita, PS3, and PS4. It truly adds a lot of value to the PlayStation gaming experience. Also, The Last of Us Remastered is coming to PS4 so you might look into PS4 if some of the games you want will eventually be on PS4. The PS4 is still in its first year so it won't have a ton of games to choose from for a little while, but I have faith that it will do well over its lifespan.

As far as the different PS3 models, there have been several revisions. If you want PS2 backwards compatibility, you have to get an early production PS3 that has a PS2 hardware/software emulator and they go for a pretty penny. The hardware PS2 emulator has the best compatibility with PS2 games. A general rule of thumb on PS2 compatibility is that if the PS3 has 4 USB ports, it is compatible with PS2. Backwards compatibility was dropped in later models to bring down the cost. Be wary though as these were the PS3 phats and they have lots of issues with overheating and suffering from the yellow light of death. I had a PS3 that died from the YLOD and I replaced it with a PS3 slim. The super slim is the latest PS3 hardware revision and comes with a small hard drive (12GB I believe), but can be upgraded. All PS3 hard drives can be replaced/upgraded but you will need to backup save data prior to the replacement/upgrade since the hard drive is encrypted to the PS3 console and can't be used anywhere else unless reformatted.

I highly recommend either purchasing a used PS3 that is currently on firmware 3.55 or getting one that is downgradable. Firmware 3.55 is absolutely necessary for installing any kind of custom firmware on your ps3, and custom firmware will allow you to convert ANY of your ripped ps2 games into PSN classics that will run on any model of ps3. Aside from that, custom firmware is also the only way to enjoy MHP3rd with the English patch installed.
Also, based on your tastes you should enjoy these games too (available whether you install CFW or not)
Tales of Symphonia Chronicles
Tales of Xillia
White Knight Chronicles
Eternal Sonata
Mass Effect
Skyrim
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Dragon Age
Star Ocean: The Last Hope International
Persona 3 FES (PS2 Classic)
Persona 4 (PS2 Classic)

The Persona games are some of my favorite games and I'm an RPG guy like you. Definitely check them out if you get that PS3 and you'll instantly love your new console.

Well I've got a 360 and already own/have completed half of those but the ones I haven't look good.

How would I know if its downgrade able? I'm watching a couple of mint condition 160gb slim (not super slim) ones on eBay at the moment. Would they be any good?

It all depends on the particular model. Here's a fancy chart that details which models can be downgraded: Fat and Slim
