Use Laptop Screen As A PS3 Screen?

Post by NaSty13 » Wed Oct 16, 2013 12:06 pm

Is there any way i can use my laptop screen as a monitor for my PS3?
Ive read around some places and some people say 'IF' the laptop had HDMI out, then you can but otherwise you cant because most laptops only have HDMI in.

If you can do i have to mess around with stuff like video cards n stuff?

Maybe someone can shed some more light on this?

first of all, your laptop has hdmi out not in, it would require hdmi in or the capability to recieve input from an hdmi source which is does not. your best choice is a usb video "capture" card. you can find literally 2 dollar avi/component ones on ebay/amazon but if you want hdmi or component with good 720p quality it can cost you anywhere from 40-250$

I have no idea what is a video capture card

Could you post a link of what I will need exactly? Also can my laptop get messed up by using it as a screen for my PS3?

what your trying to do can be done but is more technical then you may think

if your just using an old laptop screen you stip it down to just the lcd and its control boards, go to fleebay or what ever electronic site of your liking and look for an adapter for your lcd(look up the ribbon type it uses, the flex cable that connects the control board to the lcd circuit board) to dvi, order a hdmi (male)to dvi(male) cable, conect it all together and your in business,

or find a pc lcd like an acer p191w pc lcd(the one i use)for around $40 and git the hdmi to dvi cable off amazon for around $3-8,
then use the ps1/2/3 av cable for audio out or the digital out line for it

ive had this lcd sense new in early 2007, and the only issue ive had is the caps in the power board died last week, i had it fixed the next day as radio shack actually carries the capacitors in stock at stores for $1.49 for the 2!! and i take it every were with me on trips along with the ps3, plus it is a 1080P lcd, it is also a rare lcd that supports a wider array of input signals(you can run it from a dvd player and other devices that most pc lcd's don't normally support connection with)

here is the speaker set i use, if the power brick dies just bypass the surge protection fuse in it and it will work fine
http://www.amazon.com/Boston-Acoustics- ... 0+speakers

ive used these speakers sense 2001 when i got them and fixed the brick for free

here is my audio adapter, mine has 2 a/v splitters adapters as i run both ps3 and 360 though them(ps3 is much louder)
http://www.amazon.com/Manhattan-inches- ... o+3.5+jack

i built my first audio adapter out of old vcr and pc parts and a airisal can lid lol

here is the hdmi to dvi cable i use
http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-HDMI ... dmi+to+dvi

if your going down the laptop lcd route it will be tough but this is the type of part your looking for
http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/370796204469?lpid=82
though you will have to find the one for your lcd type and plug set

there used to be a vid on YouTube that demonstrated one of these boards with a laptop lcd and a ps3 playing black ops zombie edition but i cant find it now

if your just wanting movies and ps1/ small psn games, use the non-vaio remote-play hack, you can use google for how to set up that one
and eating thrifty maid noodles because of it......seriously!?! off brand noodles.....ouch i got burned by tech support.....ouch........

It should be noted that the display adapter has to support HDCP otherwise the screen will stay black when used with a PS3. I don't know if that is a standard feature of such LVDS to DVI adapter boards, but I would assume not.

E: I guess this does not help the OP because he seems to want a solution that doesn't require disassembling the laptop.

Yeah, rightly said ^
I guess this is way too technical for me. Im not in any rush to do this, but i might think of buying a PC LCD and DVI adapter cable thing. I guess i'll have to fork out a bit of money :/

You guys seem to know your sh*t :D

learned everything at the school of hard knocks, lol
