Some Selling/Buying advice required

Post by praed0r » Sat Jul 06, 2013 7:07 pm

Hi,
I have a 60Gb ps2 compatible ps3 that I want to replace with a super slim and have a few questions.

1 Can I backup my current drive and use it to restore all my games to the new system - on my own sony account ? (to save me having to download hundreds of Gb's again)
2 If I buy a second hand super slim do I have to do anything to ensure that I can register it to my account ? (ie make sure previous owner has de-registered it)
3 I will still have the old system when I get the replacement - could I just hook them up and transfer everything ?

Anyone with a similar experience and comments to make would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have a few questions for you:
1 - why would you replace such an awesome console?
2 - why would you replace such an awesome console?
3 - why would you replace such an awesome console?

my questions aside, let me try to answer yours:

you can manually backup saves, music, videos and pictures and transfer it to the other PS3. As for games, I'm pretty sure you'd have to redownload and reinstall them on the new PS3, but it can't be that easy as that would allow anyone to just share accounts. My guess is that you will have better luck talking to someone over at sony, I recommend this before changing systems.

I would simply restore that PS3 to factory default just in case

I think you can, but you are very limited to what you can transfer

A year ago my 80GB PS3 died and I got a 60GB model (I LOVE IT!), fortunetely for me I keep backups of all my system's savedata's so I didn't loose most of my game's progresses, except a few games that either disabled trophies when I loaded the saves, or some saves that didn't even copy in the first place. But overall you shouldn't have problems with saves, music, pictures and videos, but you will have problems with PSN purchased games and your PSN account in general.

Yes you can but keep in mind that some saves are copy protected so you'll lose them. The rest of the non-copy protected saves are able to be used on the new console.

First of all - thanks for taking the time to reply, you've clarified a few things for me.

Secondly, my old machine is very old, I got it on launch night and I don't want to wait till it fails on me, so I thought replacing it now would be a good idea, I will be getting a PS4 at launch as well, but the PS3 will be well used for at least the next 2/3 years.

I haven't decided whether to sell the old one or not - based on my past history I will probably find a use for it.

Thanks Cas, I'm not worried about the game saves and trophies as much as the installations themselves, I have about 200Gb of installed games which I would rather not download again - but I suppose I may have no choice.

if your 60 has never failed then just do a thermal paste replacement and proper break in and your set for the next 8 to 10 years
its simple and easy to do!!!( do not use artic silver 5, it has a huge break in period of 200+hours at 20 min intervals, or 3 months to cure on its own without running the system)

as for the backup built into the ps3 it will transfer all saves and data to the new ps3, but most games have to be reactivated, just go to your download page in psn and re-download the games long enough to git the activation file
the only game ive had issues with is resistance 3 save-data but this is even know by sony just let it take the hour to delete the data then do the transfer

as for system deactivation, you can only have 2 ps3's on your sony account so if you have an old one that died before you deactivated it you will have to deactivate all your psn associated consoles and reactivate them one at a time and re-activate all games and content
there shouldn't be any issues with activating a previously activated system as your just associating it with your account
and Sony doesn't block this unless the system is registered in the psn as stolen, but most users never do this when theyre unit is stolen(ive only seen one have this issue)the only other activation issues is a banned system and those are usually blocked from connecting to psn at all but super slims aren't likely to have this issue

the only other recommendation is that you don't use the six-axis controller on the super slim as it glitches from time to time on the slim and super slim consoles, the only reason ive seen to show why, is that it has issues with the vibration commands the system sends to it, and sense it doesn't have that function it crashes the controller
and eating thrifty maid noodles because of it......seriously!?! off brand noodles.....ouch i got burned by tech support.....ouch........
