Repaired system HDD issue.

Post by muscarella_jc » Sat May 04, 2013 6:57 am

Hi everyone, I hate to be this guy, but I can't seem to find an answer and was wondering if anyone has tried this. I can't be the first with this idea, but here goes.

I recently sent my PS3 in to Sony for Repair after getting a YLOD. The system wouldn't boot into Recovery mode and if my system wasn't an original 60GB model with BC, or if I had a second systems, I probably would have attempted to fix it myself. I get too anxious and shaky when fiddling with tech thats not easily replaceable. Anyway, when I sent the system in for repair, I switched the HDD out with an older one. After about 10 days or so I received the exact same system back. However when I placed the original HDD in it, it wanted to format it as if it was a different system. After some research online, it seems that if you switch the HDD, then restore the system to factory settings, its almost like getting a new system in that the old HDD is no longer synced to it.

My question is this, would I be able to access the PS3 Recovery menu with a PS3 HDD that has not been synced to the system and if so, If I were to run the recovery options rebuild database and restore file system, would it possibly resync the HDD without losing it's information. I have yet to try it yet and was wanting to know if anyone else has tried this, I can't seem to find any information on it.

don't take this too seriously as I haven't fooled around with my ps3 for a while, but iirc, HDDs are encrypted with a special key that's in the hardware of your ps3 (the motherboard), meaning that only the ps3 that formatted the HDD can access it, this key/number is not just randomly generated and can't be changed, knowing that your ps3 doesn't want to read this HDD means they either changed the entire motherboard, or some of its components, including the one with this serial key (that btw is unique to every ps3)
