Changing Required Firmware

Post by BlackRose13 » Fri Oct 02, 2015 4:19 am

The app.db lists the required firmware for each game to run. Has anyone tried editing this to allow games to run on lower firmwares? It won't, of course, allow games that actually require higher firmware features to run, but for incremental updates that didn't add any new underlying features, such as requiring 3.52 instead of 3.51 or 3.50, I imagine that a simple edit would bypass the check. Is anyone able to confirm this?

Would like to know this as well. Sounds like a good idea.

I did try this on PSM Unity 1.0.6 on Firmware 3.18. PSM Unity 1.0.6 required 3.30+. I changed the value to 03.1800, but it didn't have any effect.

Nope, I knew it wouldn't work when I tried it but since it was an easy change I tried it with Persona 4 Dancing All Night. My Vita ran 3.50 at the time and the game required 3.52. I changed the entry in the DB to 3.500 and all it succeeded in doing was display the message "This game requires firmware 3.50 to run. Current firmware 3.50."

You would have to modify the param.sfo and resign the eboot for it to work on lower FW's.

Oh and it also broke the ability to install game updates somehow...

Interesting. Looks like it's possible, but the game will crash if it requires unavailable features. I wonder what firmware the used game required, and what firmware the Vita was on. I will try getting P4D, which requires 3.52, to run on a 3.51 Vita tonight, since I don't imagine any new firmware calls were added in such a small update.

note that "val 51707904" is literally 0x03150000 and "val 50397184" is 0x03010000, so I'd imagine the val for 3.51 would be 0x03510000, or 55640064

If i understood the param.sfo correctly P4D actually requires firmware 3.30. I do think that should be possible. The JP version of this same game has a requirement of 3.50 even with recent updates.

I hope someone figures this out so we can play Persona 4 DAN on 3.51 :-)

Sorry to be slow giving you all an update. Unfortunately, even after setting the updated values in the app.db to require firmware 3.51, P4 DAN passes the "Firmware Update Required" prompt, but then crashes with an error. It looks like there is something else that we'll need to change somewhere.
