So is it safe to go online with the VITA?

VHBL (Vita Half Byte Loader) is an open source tool to load PSP homebrews on the Playstation Vita.
VHBL can be downloaded at http://wololo.net/vhbl

So is it safe to go online with the VITA?

Post by rafael707 » Mon Mar 05, 2012 5:15 pm

I use VHBL, and keep "pilot mode" on all the time, worried that sony will patch my game.. When will it be ok to go online and use features like PSN,NEAR,facebook, twitter, web browser, etc??

yeah, I asked the same question on another page. someone said they'd been online since installing vhbl with no problems but put it in flight mode every time he used vhbl.
I've still not been on myself though for fear of a being patched unknowingly but that's only cos I only have uncharted at the moment and there is no online play, when I get fifa next week I'm gonna want to play online. I've backed the game up on my PC so if Sony were to patch it could I uninstall it and put it back on the Vita or would they fix it so that I couldnt do that?

I have been online, logged in to psp store, downloaded content etc with no problems. I don't expect it to last forever however. In theory they could possibly ban your device, but that seems unlikely since the security of the Vita has not yet really been compromized in any serious way.

As for flight mode/airplane mode/pilot mode or whatever it may be in your language: it does nothing to prevent wifi from becoming active. Both adhoc and infrastructure/internet access works fine. It even displays both the symbols for flight mode and wifi/adhoc (A) at the same time. This is broken IMO (probably works for 3G however) and will probably be addressed in a future firmware. For now, If you are worried, turn off wifi manually and remove access to any wifi AP.

For sure they won´t ban any Vita - why should they ?

It is not illegal to buy a game and play it. Also nobody commits a crime if his game crashes.
And as long as there is no proof any "ban" would be really a crime against us.

Besides there is no way to run illegal copies - as long as we don´t see that possibility Sony won´t get angry.
Then: Sony wants us to use the Vita, to buy games and to go online - of course.
And: Sonys image would really suffer, at least now where just some freaks play dusty games from ancient times on a high end device...

Like I said, it's unlikely, but it could happen.

You definately violate their EULA though by bypassing security measures by
crashing a game on purpose and running unsigned code. (OK so I haven't read
the EULA, by I would be willing to bet quite a few bucks this behaviour is in
violation with it ;) ).

Laws differ, where I am it's not illegal to bypass this kind of security, in other
countries it may be. Not really relevant anyway, criminal matters is something
for the police to deal with, not companies.

Breaking an EULA is not usually a criminal offense in itself, but definately enough
to get a device kicked off any online services, account suspended, having your game
license revoked etc, if SONY would feel like it. At the moment there is nothing to gain
for them really by doing that, but this may change.

Morally I understand and agree with your point of view, but it's not the way the world
works.

Technically VHBL is not bypassing any security measure, in particular any DRM, which makes it perfectly legal.
On the other hand, yes, I believe we are breaching the EULA which specifies something about attempting to run programs that have not been explicitly allowed by Sony, or something like that.

Then again, it's their choice if they want to put HBL users out of the PSN, but once again they would be *** off the wrong people.
If you need US PSN Codes, this technique is what I recommend.

It is legal, but it's violating the EULA, which afaik, gives Sony the excuse to ban your PSN account for example, as the EULA is tied to it. I'm no law expert, so correct me if I'm wrong.
