Put your vita in airplane mode and disable the wifi, then try it again.

Downloading the 1.60 software update wouldn't be the hard part. Get the Vita to install it is the impossible part of your idea.

Afaik it is possible that the vita will download the 1.61 (if the files are avaible! - check www.mediafire.com/ofws for files) if you use the trick to skip the update for accessing online stuff. It should also install it successfully.

Psp or Ps vita? And if you have Open CMA then disconnect your laptop and ps vita from your wifi network. Then, transfer the files.

English: I don't think that Sony would have changed how the update system works since the PSP times... Why would they let you download the firmware and then install it on your device without any additional protection? Doesn't make much sense in my eyes.

Well it is possible with the server trick that the Vita thinks the installed firmware is the newest, so why shouldnt it be possible to install a higher firmware, than the installed one? Afaik it is possible.
