What does the upplane and downplane do?

I want to add more blocks into my Lamecraft mod, I'm selecting a texture but I don't understand what does the upPlane and downPlane or something close to that do? Help!

WTF bro, if you don't understand that, then just don't start a mod. We have enough mods that add just blocks now. Btw if you could code, you would understand.
