They did this because they were tired of dumb iOS fans saying Android is less secure (a load of bulls*it).
I can personally tell you that a system isn't necessarily less secure, it is just less popular and therefore attracts less hackers, just look at how many hacks and viruses exists on windows phone compared to windows PC, and you will see it has a direct correlation with how popular or impopular they are.
