Computer hangs when connecting external HDD

Hey I recently purchased a WD 1 TB external HDD and whenever I connect in to my computer safely remove hardware icon appears but the drive doesnt appear. After 10 seconds my computer freezes. I have tried disabling antivirus,icon cache but it still doesn't work.The HDD works on my sister's laptopbut not mine.Plz help me.btw I my OS is Windows XP.

Uninstall the driver, reinstall the driver.

sounds like a hardware fail to me, but it could be many things really, i had a hp laptop that wouldnt boot up with a certain usb stick inserted so in theory it could be, that its not compatible with your laptop ... idk

have you tried the disk in a diffrent usb port and does these ports work with other usb equipment? ... and what os is your sister using on her laptop?

just wait for it to load (i bet some programs are doing that)
