From Windows to Ubuntu. (QUESTIONS)

Post by Askarik » Tue Mar 22, 2011 4:51 pm

I want to change my system from win7 to Ubunutu 10.10 . I have some questions:
1- Does it support Microsoft Office? (editing and opening)
2- If not, does OpenOffice.Org support Microsoft Office files?
3- Can it play 3D games?
4- Does Wine support most of Windows programs?
5- Does it worth to change my OS?

I dont know how can you ask if it supports ms office.
it does not support ms office as it is from Microsoft.
you can only play very few 3D games due to lack of game releases on ubuntu.
Ya it supppots some win programs

Ubuntu comes with OpenOffice, and yes, OO supports the horrible MS Office stuff. You can always run MS Office through Wine anyway.
Askarik wrote:3- Can it play 3D games?
Err... of course. If you mean Windows games (which are most of them), they don't run natively, you have to execute them through Wine. if you like 3D effects, I bet you'll get amazed with Compiz-Fusion  I bet you never imagined you could do such things

I suggest you dual boot until you get comfortable with Ubuntu, since even if GUI is almost identical, how the OS works is completely different and you need to learn a lot of new stuff (such as using repositories, understading Linux filesystem, file permissions, and so on). IMHO Linux is way superior to Windows for advanced users.
I wanna lots of mov al,0xb

I agree with m0skit0.
Put it on dual boot and familiarise yourself with it before using it completely.
And yes, Ubuntu with Wine is a LOT better than MicroSoft WindBlows

You could risk losing the ability to execute thousands of applications and games if you switch completely. Wine does not work with everything and is certainly not better at running windows programs than windows itself. No operating system is better than another, how you like it just depends on how well it does the tasks you want done. Keep with dual boot and get the best of both worlds. That is all...

I must disagree with you on your first comment. There is no risk. All windows applications from the MS-DOS to Windows 7 are supported. The only problem might be of locating the file after it is installed. I have Windows 7 and Vista and Ubuntu on triple-boot but unvaryingly I always choose Ubuntu. You wanna know why? Cuz it's better is all...
However, if depends a lot on personal choice. I for one don't like Mac but my brothers love it. As I said, mainly personal choice than anything

i too suggest dual booting, but you can also demo ubuntu live from an installation disk without installing anything. granted you cant do much with that, but you can play around with it and get a feel without actually having to install anything ;)

Usb works fine here, T'Ociàn. [
All windows applications from the MS-DOS to Windows 7 are supported. /quote] I find that statement there as rather humorous. Wine is not complete in terms of supporting the executions all applications, even if you had all of the required files.
