I think you should not base your graphics accelerator decision on make, but rather on which has glide support and which has/had better drivers.

This is what I would base my decision on. Because many or most games of that time used glide instead of direct garbageTM. Even the old unreal used glide and only got at a very later time full direct garbageTM support (patch 226i I belive).
