I just tried booting linux mint and it goes through a loop of starting to boot it, then restarts the pc and tries again. Although the same mint DVD on my brother's pc works fine.

then it is very likely that you need to check all the wires inside the computer, I would suppose that you need to check the RAM or the Hard Drive.
