Open-source/free book on IT

Post by asgard20032 » Mon Mar 25, 2013 12:19 am

Hi, (well, I know, I know, I missed people here... its been a while I was not here, sorry, college take most of my free time, but even if I didnt log in, I came here from time to time to check what was happening), this thread is to talk about book that we can qualify as open-source book, or free book. Yep, a thread about legal book that want to share the knowledge with everyone for free.

Please, share any such book you know, here are the one I found up:

The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction, under the creative common license.
From what I heard, this is a great book, even distrowatch aready made a review. From what I saw about this book is that it cover vim, bash, tcsh, in both, interactive mode and scripting, and it cover the standard that we can expect from a book on the command line, like archiving, permission, moving directory........ Well, im not verry good to describe it, but well, just check the "Table of content".

Ruby on Rails Tutorial: Learn Web Development with Rails, MIT license
The perfect book to get started in web development. Ruby + Rail and Python + Django are currently(the currently was said in around 2013) verry popular to make website. More time on content (and when I say content, I dont just talk about picture and text, but also about interactive content), and less time wasted to reinvent the wheel, more concise code, more readable code, and also, more fun to write. Altought I mentionned Python, I was just mentionning it, but this book is exclusively about Ruby and Rail. If I where to write a website, it would be in a modern language like Ruby, Scala or Haskell. (Well, python is also a modern language, but i dont know why, i dont have much interest in python). This book + some previous experience in Ruby (or while learning Ruby) with some HTML reference can get a good result pretty easily, without much effort.

Learn You a Haskell for Great good, Creative common license
This book is like the defacto standard book to get started on haskell. If you go on the IRC or stackoverflow and ask people to recommend you book on haskell, im almost certain this book will be mentionned in the first result (but don't do this on stackoverlow, its against their rule to ask such question). Myself I don't like the childish style they gave to the book, its still free high quality stuff.

Learn You some Erlang for Great good, Creative common license
This book is like the one on Haskell I just mentionned, but for people that prefer Erlang.

The Debian Administrator's Handbook, another Creative common license
If you are new to linux, or just someone that used linux since a while, but didnt yet played with the system, or just a Ubuntu or Debian or any Debian derivative user that need more power with its system, there is this book. Well, im not verry good to describe book....

The Revised Slackware Book Project
The Slackware book of choice.

The FreeBSD handbook
BSD strenght reside in their documentation. Their handbook and their man page are of high quality, and can even be useful for a linux user.

(and so on, search Arch linux and gentoo handbook)

Thanks for sharing, Asgard. The Command Line one is especially useful since I've only been using Linux a short while, and what I've learned has been picked up through trial and error. Looking forward to reading through that, and some of these other books too.
