looking for help with a 6th sense mini-pc idea

Post by thekornerkids » Mon Feb 04, 2013 1:45 am

the below is a video of sixth sense technology created by pranav mistry at mit

http://www.ted.com/talks/view/lang/en//id/685

so what im trying to do is recreate his idea but i want it to be a stand alone device and have integrated voice control
i heared about a thing called a mini-pc, the one id like to use is the kimdecent b12 since it already has a webcam built in
the webcam would be used with the open source gesture recognition software by pranav mistry
and as a screen id use a pico projector and a mirror like mistry did
as a power source i think id probly use a usb power pack

i want to do voice control but im not sure of any good programs, i know theres siri for the iphone and skiview for android
but would skiview work if im emulating windows through wine
also a problem i know i will have is that the software is windows 32 bit based and the mini-pc runs android
to work around this i was thinking id run ubuntu and set-up wine to auto-start upon boot up
once wine starts i would use a windows auto-run file to start the 6th sense software

so does any one know if this set-up with the different devices would work?
would my solution resolve the operating system problems?
what are your ideas? any feed back would be helpful?

its a portable gaming system running from a mini-pc?
i think its a good concept but its not stand alone, you need a keyboard and mouse to even configure it to use the buttons.
you could use the 6th sense software and have an augmented reality keyboard/mouse for set-up, have it project the game on a wall even if you want

or have it be a slider like the ps vita, the bottom slide out could be a touch pad mouse and button.
itd look cool having just a box of light around the keys and the keys be light up. then the rest be see through. and some how have it be touch

Your idea is very undeveloped, and as well as that your grasping at straws to get new idea's. I could post more information on how dated the technologies that you think will be used for the idea. We may discuss more, however.

I do believe in the potential, the technology is there. The manpower/software development would be over the course of 2+ years. The largest problem with the idea is the user base.

Don't mean to shoot down an awesome idea. Humanity is not quite ready for such an idea. Check out Second Life, and the movie "The Matrix".

Thanks for your time.

i already know there's better technology, but that's available publicly??
i do not see how its an undeveloped idea. the concept is id use a pico projector connected to a mini-pc which would run off of a usb power pack. all of this would then be enclosed in a case which could be worn around the neck as a stand alone device
the software id be using runs under a 32 bit windows os, but the mini-pc uses linux. so when ubuntu starts id have wine automatically run, from here id be in a 32 bit os and use auto run scripts to start the 6th sense software.

im just wondering about if this set-up would work and the possible other problems id encounter.
or if you could offer a better solution, djindy, as since you right there is better technology now

First let's take a look at the display you are wanting to use a projector for interfacing. IMHO this is impractical. Imagine if you will 30 people in a room with this device. Thats 30 screens running all around collapsing images into something unintelligible. This problem brings to mind an item I found in a Sony device that was something like a pop machine dispenser, only for electronics and not soda. Take a look at these computer display glasses that hook into a PC display port. http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/04/ ... buy-today/

This solves one issue. As I research the idea a few more minutes I will poke some more holes in the idea and offer some more helpful ways of improving the idea. Of course being able to project images would be extremely useful as well, something like the new Total Recall touch a surface to display information a device can be mounted to the glasses themselves.

Obviously running Windows through wine is a fail in and of itself. The performance loss by emulating windows would be a killer. The best option would be to have a native windows device. I am looking into such a device as I write this post. And will post my findings. If size is not the largest concern there are many windows computers that are just a bit larger than a cell phone, which people seem accustomed to having in there pockets anyways.

i agree running windows natively would be better but as since i didnt know about the small windows computers you speak of and am not able to find any information about them i was going to do it through wine. are the windows computers you talk of able to be battery powered?

ive actualy seen that web page from wired. i wasnt planning to project on a wall though but rather i could project it onto a binder or a peice of paper or some thing similar that id carry around or have easily accessbile. as for 30 people using a device like mine and projecting on walls at one time i dont think thatll happen, the 6th sense concept has been introduced some time in 2008. its 5 years later and i havent seen any one with a device like it.
