If you are trying to boost your wireless signal to reach your friends router this may give you a better signal range. Another good idea would be to buy a Wireless Repeater/Extender and extend your friends wireless signal to your house. This would mean you can place the router in the best place in your house for a signal and connect to it.

To be honest any wireless N router can be made into a Repeater. Just get a cheap N Router and test it out. I have 3 Apple Airport Extremes which I use but are quite expensive but I have used cheap alternatives in the past which do the same job

What I suggest is seeing if your router is compatible with dd-wrt. dd-wrt will unlock some feature that the original software may not have been able to give you, such as the function to repeat/extend.
EDIT
This is assuming you have a router of your own. If not, simple linksys router gets the job done well.
