As a working and everyday environment, i would vote GNU/Linux or FreeBSD, both can achieve same thing. Working and everyday include: Browsing on internet without virus, writing document (altought, on Linux, setting up the dictionnary and other language thing can be a little trouble, getting package to work, setting localization, entering setup in LibreOffice, to only discover you only did the setup for the document, so next document, in English again... In country like mine, where there is 2 official language, english and french, I have to set up both dictionary), programming, messing up with some thing, watching what is available in the software center(or equivalent in other distribution), doing a server...(minecraft server), to even playing minecraft. Although, minecraft performance on Linux is not at its best, maybe because of the openJDK's implementation or Icetea...

For all remain (mostly playing game, and doing scheduled virus scan and defragmentation), I would say windows.

Yep, on Linux, I never heard we had to defragment the hard disk, or do any virus scan, except if we do a mail server or send a file to a windows user.

He's 13, what do you expect? :P

Anyways I'll go with Linux, but it's technically wrong, Linux is just the kernel. Think of every distribution as a different OS.
@asgard there's malware for Linux/*BSD too. No system is 100% secure.

If you haven't had a look yet, I would suggest you to check Debian GNU/kFreeBSD
"Why would you prefer Debian GNU/kFreeBSD to Debian GNU/Linux?" you may ask? http://wiki.debian.org/Debian_GNU/kFreeBSD_why

Windows is my favorite operating system just because it's so easy to use has everything I need on it, majority of applications on the internet support Windows, I like Windows 8's easy to use interface (I admit though I was a bit dubious about Windows 8's "Metro" style they had introduced but it's all the same windows really.
