Anyone know how to reduce ping over WiFi?

Post by garrei » Mon May 14, 2012 5:56 am

Here's my conundrum, I play Counter-Strike: Source... a lot... and I built my new PC recently (specs below) I connect to my router via WiFi and sometimes when I play online I get a latency of 40-50 which is pretty good, very playable. but MOST of the time and at random times it spikes for long periods of time to a latency of 300 to 1000+. I know it can achieve the latency of 40-50 so why wont it stay there!? I disconnect all wifi devices, and anything else possibly using the router, I changed the WiFi channel, what else can I do?

I thought it could be redirecting to a different ISP server further away from my location, but if thats so, can I somehow force it to connect to a single server? (the one thats got the lowest ping?)

anyone know how to do that? or got any other suggestions?

Well this could be due to several factors:
  • Other devices interfere (don't have to be your devices)
  • Poor hardware/software on wifi card or router (or both)

You can't.

I live on a farm at least 2km from my closest neighbour. there are no other devices around to interfere. i guess i did buy a cheap internal WiFi card but it is Dlink branded... so eh :/

Cheap wifi card + cheap wifi router... well what can you expect... And about living in a farm, well... that doesn't mean there are no interferences.

You could switch to D-Lan. Played Counter-Strike:Source too and had exactly the same problems. Now switched to D-Lan and everything works just fine^^
If the power lines in your house aren't too old it should work flawless.
