Windows Vista/Seven introduced a whole new driver system. Most manufacturers complained about this new driver system, but of course Microsoft didn't care. For example my desktop's graphics card cannot run on Windows 7 without giving a lot of blue screen crashes, but works (almost) flawlessly on XP.

well thanks a lot for the info, i guess i have to give up for the moment and use XP :|

i just made an experiment with a live usb of ubuntu 11.10 with both built-in and external wifi drivers
You sure you installed the right one? try the live usb again and go to additional drivers, it should detect and install the broadcom drivers for you, I recommend you install ubuntu on a usb hdd/pendrive (not just live, but a full installation)
btw I learn about Linux through my PS3 :)
