Re: Why do game developers prefer Windows?
now that was a good read but I have one question
if C is high-level for a shading language then how low dose it go ?
(BTW this made me lol)

EDIT: oh and before you call me "n00b" and to "GTFO"Which they, in all of Microsoft's collective imagination, called... the High Level Shading Language (HLSL)
Wow. I don't even care about most of this stuff and it's still a great read!

Calling C a "high-level" language is a bit... anachronistic, to say the least. C can go (almost) as low as assembly. In fact you can embed assembly in C using asm().fate6 wrote:if C is high-level for a shading language then how low dose it go ?

Re: Why do game developers prefer Windows?
I think it is quite simple, Visual Studio is a really nice bit of software that makes coding a breeze with features such as Intelisense and the likes. I have used several other development IDE's but Visual Studio is just so polished it is one tool that Microsoft have made that is "just right" yes it has its own little quirks but it is just so solid and gets better every version.
Microsoft have always tried involve developers early on in the dev cycle which is why they seem to be getting better and better, ironically they are also becoming more and more standards driven (unlike other companies that use a certain fruit as there logo).
If you had asked me what I thought of MS 10 years ago they were scum of the earth and like everyone I hated them but slowly they have improved and I don't mind there platform as much anymore. Sony on the other hand, they drive me mad they make amazing hardware but god there software sucks!!!

Re: Why do game developers prefer Windows?
You can inline assembly (by inlining C) in Ruby too, it doesn't make it low-level.m0skit0 wrote:Calling C a "high-level" language is a bit... anachronistic, to say the least. C can go (almost) as low as assembly. In fact you can embed assembly in C using asm().
Inline assembly doesn't make C low-level any more than inline C makes Ruby low-level.
Re: Why do game developers prefer Windows?
I agree. That was not the main point anyway.

Re: Why do game developers prefer Windows?
Sounds very interesting, and i think here everybody uses Windows.
Re: Why do game developers prefer Windows?
You're plain wrong. Also FYI most devs/hackers do not use Windows (although some do because they're either stubborn or scottish
).
