What's with the huge lack of relevant advice? Sure, offering Linux as a solution is probably better in the long run, but he just wants an antivirus for now.

I use Avast!, but I've heard good things about AVG also. The Firefox add-on, NoScript, is a lot more useful to me than any antivirus though.

@moskito: As many noob take from googe some how to tutorial, and inserting just lines in terminal what they dont know - is a security risk, like mayor changes need root access.
today, windows ask before, like old times, "are you sure to install this"
I dont speak about bug's.
Like windows has lots of user, thefore have hackers/crackers interested more to find windows bug's.

ON TOPIC: fist dont visit some sites, you must allways know, what you do!
Best free antivirus is microsoft essential, i my self like eset/nod32

A good virus scanner is Microsoft Security Essentials. No ads, no starting banner, very unintrusive overall.
I completely agree, it's the best! It runs all the time, never slows down PC. Notify's you when you have downloaded a virus, and is only 17.3 mb :)

@jeerum: sorry but you seem to mistake Ubuntu with Linux. And anyways, Linux has almost no viruses and Windows have thousands. And besides, Linux is designed for security, while Windows is not. Since this is already off-topic, I'm not discussing this further, but I'm open to discussion on a proper thread.

ON TOPIC: I would warn you about closed source antivirus, specially Microsoft's, because this company is known to introduce backdoors and send relevant private information for their benefice or helping authorities track you. That could be looked at as a virus as well.

Not that I doubt what you say, I'm open to it. But could you provide a source, please? Do you mean like Microsoft SpyNet?
