Also if possible one can upgrade to ics, which allows easy removal of google accounts without reseting your phone.

Hello,

I tried this method

/data/system/accounts.db renamed to accounts.db.bak

however, it took the contacts with it.
When I restored the accounts.db, the phone tried to boot on and on and it ended up with a factory reset.

You had contacts already associated with your accounts. Thus by making that .db file unaccessible, you no longer had those contacts.
