Yes, also, a few days before Sony had a firmware update which I installed, this may have broken the firmware/software. I had no idea the update may had/had not broken my phone as I had never used the 3G sides of things ever before. It was only on reflection (whilst writing my last post before this and reading what you just said) that my brain put the missing piece of the jigsaw together. So either, like you said, the firmware/software was broken in the box so to speak or the firmware/software update broke it.
