New Phone = Me stumped

Post by Dwighty » Sun Nov 13, 2011 4:28 pm

Can you help me with the following problem please.

I'll try to make it brief.

I have never ever owned a mobile phone before and have no real understanding on how they work. Well, I own one now, an Xperia Play. Got it super cheap (PSP price). Anyway after spending some time with it I've managed to do stuff like ringing my house etc :P

I've discovered Android Amrket which is pretty awesome. I always thougth mobile phones were just that "a mobile phone". I've been living under a rock for a few years I reckon. Anyway, I've hit a problem...

I've bought 1GB worth of mobile internet data to use on my phone. I've registered the phone, they've sent me the auto config' settings for the mobile phone internet use, which I've set. The problem I have is, I don't know how to get the internet to work through my 1GB data plan. My phone works through wi-fi fully, but I don't want that, I want my phone to use 3G (or whatever it is) to connect to the internet with my 1gb allowance. I've tried switching off my wi-fi etc but it still doesn't work, ie: switching of my wi-fi doesn't automatically put me into 3G internet (or whatever it is).

Please help me. I'm stuck. Am I supposed to press or do something?

You have to enable mobile-data. Go to Settings->Wireless and Network->Mobile Networks->Enable Mobile Data. The names could be a bit different because I have translated it from my german phone.

Hi, yes, I've tried that and it still doesn't work.

I'm wondering whether hitting it with a hammer will work? :P

Thanks for the reply.

Ok, whoever is the first to help me get this working will win a cyber cookie.

You probbaly have Android 2.3 gingerbread, right? If so drag the notification bar down. you'll see a button on the top with 2 arrows (1 up and 1 down), press that. It should go into 3g.

2e way: Walk away from your Wi-Fi hotspot (walk outside) and start the browser.
E-Yup.

Yeah, gingerbread. I did exactly what you said and dragged down the notification bar, pressed the arrows, then went outside but to no avail. I did this repeatedly but still no luck. I pressed the up/down arrow sign but nothing happened, ie: no visual change nor any indication on the screen I had pressed anything. My signal strength bar is on 3 out of 4 so I presume the signal is strong enough. I'm wondering whether there is an android app' which will put it into 3g for me...

Thanks for the reply Dallox, appreciate the help.

Maybe you set the apn wrong. Try to recreate it or let it set automatically.

You need to need setting for your internet connection,
Remember, Setting for 3g are different than normal 2g so be specific about setting and call customer care!!

best help would be to call Service Provider!!they can guide u quicker!!

Even if Customer care are waste!!Try googling your network name and 3g/2g setting!!

Ask your 3G provider about how to set up your phone, and also make them check if they've activated your 3G account properly.

I spoke all day, then all night, then all day....then all night to Virgin Media to try and resolve the problem and got absolutely nowhere.
They told me to do this, told me to do that blah blah resuslting in them telling me to factory reset the phone which I did, and it still diidn't work.

After wasting the best part of 72 hours of my life fretting about it, I decided the best option was to read the phone's instruction manual. This told me to install the PC Companion software which comes with the phone and run the 'repair firmware/software' option. It was fixed in, um....... about two minutes.

I know you think I'm stupid but c'mon, who the heck reads the operational manuals of anything these days.

Thanks for the help everyone. 8-)
