Looking to purchase a tablet and would appreciate help.

Post by Tonakai » Mon May 06, 2013 2:29 am

Hi there,

I've never really seen much point in Tablets, and still don't to be honest however; I recently discovered that you can get them running android, and for a fair price. So, I'm looking for a decent tablet that's running android with the capabilities of emulating the PSX and N64 at under £100.

If anyone can give me any suggestions, I would highly appreciate it.

Thanks for your time,

Tonakai.

Most new tablets, at least around here, can run PSX/N64. I actually just bought 2 different tablets, starting yesterday. 2 because I bought one, for $55, and the today it didn't boot, brought it back, and again, after a shutdown it didn't boot, so I brought it back and got a different model. However, now i think that was my fault. I had a TF in it that was a android boot SD for something else. I think it booted that, and it KOed :|. However, both the first one, a 4.3" Coby and the second one, a 7" polaroid ($69) can play N64 great, as well as PSX. Playing Crashed warped right now, and it is running full speed with no problems.

I actually decided I wanted a tablet because of this. For Christmas I got my brother a cheap tablet, like really cheap and bought from Wallgreens, and it ran PSX games perfectly, so I figgered it was time for me to get one. :)

So, look at addons you want. Do you want bluetooth? A full usb port for a controller (though they make adaptor's for the mini usb's)? A good camera? Since you want to play games, I would suggest getting one with either a usb port, or making sure to get a mini to usb [http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-Type-5-P ... nactsho-20] or micro to usb [http://www.amazon.com/IVSO%C2%AE-Nexus- ... nactsho-20].

Thank you for your reply, it's been really helpful. Honestly, I don't care much for camera or webcam or bluetooth or anything like that as I really just want it to be able to read pdf files, play retro consoles and occasionally browse the internet.

I looked into the Polaroid 7" and it seems like it should be everything I need, for £60, which is brilliant. Have you tested any other games on it though? I can't really find much information about emulation quality on the tablet.

Also, though I doubt this; have you had any luck with PPSSPP on it?

On a final note; the adapters you've given links to seem really good, and would certainly be beneficial as it would give me the opportunity to play games with my PS3 controller, so I think I may purchase the mini usb to usb adapter.

Actually.... I kinda bricked that one too. :|
Was trying to get google play on it, well, it can't. The more you know.

I brought it back, and got a Polaroid 4.3", which is $55 here. I wanted a small one anyways. Plus this one has Clockwork Mod recovery, as well as a cyanogenmod img. Going to try that now, as it has the google play store.

As for the PPSSPP, yeah, I didn't even try it. My computer can't even run anything full speed, and it is a dual core 3.8ghz cpu, with a nice GPU. So I just didn't bother.

If you want, I can test anything on it though. It has a 1ghz A8, a Mali 400, and 512mb ram. That is pretty standard for sub $100 ones now, so if it works on this, it will work on most.

Wow, I feel sorry for you bricking two of them. Anyway, with regards to testing; have you played Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask on it? If not, would it be too much to ask you to test it out for me? They're definitely two of my favorite N64 games, and I'd love to know that they work fine.

Don't feel sorry, Big lots has an awesome return policy, like Walmarts was 10 years ago. I just brought it back and got a new one :). I kinda expected it, I have had bad luck with android. Hince me getting a cheap one.

Still, the one I have now is "unbrickable". It has a dedicated usb mode, so even if the whole flash is corrupted and nothing can boot, I can just reinstall. Had 2 do that twice before I figured out how to get cyanogenmod to work, as I wanted google play.

Played Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask just now, and they run full speed. I didn't even have to get them, as of course I already have them on the SD card. They are among the best games for N64.

So, you just want to make sure you have at least a 1ghz+ Armv7 and a Mali 400. Not exactly top of the line stuff :). Then I would look online to see if their is a cyanogenmod for it, or even just any info. My first 2 types had no info online, and so I was out of luck on anything. And also check if it can accept a usb gamepad/keyboard. It has to have support in the linux kernel to do it. Most Cyanogenmod's can, but I don't know about others.

I would also DL a free program called ES Task Manager. It lets you do alot of things, but a big thing is changing start up programs. Way to many dang app's want to start with the tablet. I don't need VLC to run on start up, or Crackle, or ComicRack, or bloody Youtube. So blacklist them.

And a program called Android tuner will let you OC your CPU, as well as change the governor.

$199 isn't exactly cheap. Though it is nice.

If I had $100 to spend, I would get what is known as a pengpod http://www.pengpod.com/pengstore/index.php/pp7.htm

It is a "completely" open one, that can run linux. Plus it will boot from the SD slot. So if you ever screw it up, just boot up flash program, and fix it. :)

It has HDMI, an A10, 1gb ram, and usb otg. I bloody well want one. But $109 is too much for me to spend on something right now. Granted, $55 was too much. :)

It's very cheap compared to most high quality tablets. Remember, most of the time, you get what you pay for.

It has been my experience that the reason android tablets brake is software, not hardware, and at this point in time that is the main problem. Sure more cpu/ram can make things faster, but my cheap single core 1ghz arm v7 can run anything I have thrown at it. So while getting a more expensive one will make starting the program faster, it won't matter much once the program is started. Thus, if wanting to buy one on the cheap, it will still play the games he wants.

Plus, he said only 100£, which is about $50 to little to get a Nexus 7. However, if he had said over $200, I think I would have suggested that too. It has nice hardware, is quite open, and even has an Ubuntu image for it.
