Hmm, I'm not to familiar with PAL. And if by "hackable" you mean using it to softmod your PS2.

Did it not work again? The write speed doesn't really matter, so it couldn't be that. I know that your PS2 is compatible, I'm sure there isn't anything else wrong with my tutorial. Did you try any other games?
