C++

Post by Blankets_McGee » Mon Mar 31, 2014 3:48 am

Hey guys,
I'm about to go to school for programming mainly in C++ and learn a few others (Python, Java, etc..) on the side, and I was wondering if you guys could provide any tips or tricks to designing a AAA game. Or atleast a well designed game. I know I'll need more people, I have a few buddies who do 3D graphic design and 3D animation, but being a noob at any sort of language at all I would also like to know which free IDE would be easy to use and able to compile games for all platforms or if that even matters. I ask because I would like to work on some projects before I actually start school even if I have no clue what I am doing(play around if you will :) ;) ). I bought a few books and am currently reading them instead of reading and practicing at the same time because each books wants me to use a different IDE. Which one would you guys suggest? I used the search bar to try and find a topic like this but I didn't see any. Or maybe I'm blind. Any help would be appreciated and if there IS a thread with this question feel free to lock this one right away and use me as an example of idiocracy lol.

I am an IT student (finishing 2nd Year atm), I don't have any experience in collaboration with other people, and everything I did up to until now , I did alone.

For making triple A title you will need more than a couple of people experienced in different areas.
As for reading books, you won't gain anything from that, you should find some good c++ books and start working with examples right away (Primer 5th edition comes to mind).
Choosing IDE doesn't matter that much, I started with Visual studio (void allcomments() ), and that is because all exams were written in that IDE, but you can choose w/e you prefer (codeblocks, eclipse c++, heck you can even use notepad++).
Once you start writing bigger applications, you will notice why good IDE with a lot of functionality is a must.
That is just from my current knowledge, and perspective, maybe wait for other more experienced people to give you better answer, I will probably get bashed for even mentioning visual studio in these forums...

sorry Smoke. i figured I did something wrong with this post lol. but as far as not being able to learn anything from books doesn't make sense. Don't most colleges make you purchase books on the subject they are teaching? they provide every piece of information that a professor would provide professors just teach it with a hands on learning curve. Did you mention Visual is the IDE that the exams are taken on? if that's the case then ill probably use visual for the learning portion of my career and then use something else that suits my fancy :) (one with a lot of functionality as previously mentioned) I heard Qt is an upandcomer with potential? Anyway, when the time comes can I count on you guys to provide information should I need? Heck, I'll even ask some to help me make it as well. Collaboration is key. Plus, I can't do it on my own..;)

ps. please no flamming as we were all in the same boat I am at one point. Hopefully. lol

you don't know programming and you want to make a AAA game? I can help you all you want with learning programming but don't expect to make a AAA game in less than 5 years of learning.

Understandable. I know full well that I'm not going to be able to pull off a AAA game right off the bat. I know I need a full team of qualified people but honestly where do you think any big name company got started? In someones head, an idea if you will. So blowing up on me saying "You'll need years of learning" and "Not to mention a full blown team" does't help. We all want the same thing for the scene here. In no way am I trying to start a war but I was just asking for advice and if that's all you have to offer so be it, I'll take it.

Ps. Nice april fool's joke Acid_Snake ;) and ill hold you to your "I'll help you learn programming" piece :)

and I have given you my most sincere advice, either start learning programming full blown from now and expect to have enough knowledge in a few years, or find yourself a good programmer for your team (and don't expect to be making AAA titles, even big companies started small, just like we say here: don't start building a house from the roof)

Full blown it is :) got your PM link on standby as well as others ;) (hope that is ok)

Now should we keep this thread open? I say lock it, or is there a way for the OP to erase it? As I don't see this discussion going any where else from here.
