Can Dreamcast or Playstation 2 play avi, mp4, or other media
My playstation 2 is modded and I know Dreamcast might be capable of running media software on it as well. I was wondering if anyone on here had any recommendations. I'm looking for a media player that obviously plays cdrs since I don't own any dvdrs now. Thanks

The PS2 can, though I'm not sure about the Dreamcast. SMS Media Player is probably the best media player for the PS2 (if not the only one?). I've not really felt much need to use it, as I mainly just play backups of my PS2 games, and do the occasional bit of emulation.I would just like to point out that I haven't had much luck with discs from other regions (DVD's this is by the way) as they tend to crash or the video is laggy. From what I've tested Audio works fine.

Something about CD-R's make me thinks it kills the laser on Dreamcast. To me it seems like the laser works harder on CD-R's compared to GD-R's. Probably paranoid because my old Dreamcast died and I think it was laser related.

Yes, the dreamcast can in fact play AVI's. I can't remember the program to do it though. I do, however, remember that you have to make an ISO with both the program, and the AVI's.
Also, yeah, I remember when I was using the Dreamcast that there were lots of talk about using CD-R's KOing some drives. Of course, that isn't limited to just video playing CD-R's. Backups are just as bad.
Honestly, I would say that the best console to play video's, period not just that gen (well, except the PS3 with linux), would be the Xbox. You can mod that with XBMC, and play just about anything, that is below 720P. Round here xbox's are under $40 too.

Aye, with a close second probably being the Wii. I personally use my Wii for most of my media-center usage nowadays, simply because of the wireless controller. Having said that; I do run into some disc-based issues such as it telling me that DVD's are unsupported every so often. Still, WiiMC is great when streaming.Theredbaron wrote:Honestly, I would say that the best console to play video's, period not just that gen (well, except the PS3 with linux), would be the Xbox. I havn't been able to play much things with WiiMC. About the only thing I use WiiMC for is Navi-x + Shoutcast TV.Tonakai wrote:Aye, with a close second probably being the Wii. Really? That's rather strange. Using the latest version of WiiMC (I can't recall the rev off the top of my head) I am able to play AVI, MKV and MP4 files which is what all my videos are converted into. Aside from that; although I have had a few issues here and there, DVD playback also works rather well, except for a bug that causes my Wii to crash if I pause the video and resume it (sometimes skipping can also cause this).
As for the WiiMC, the Internet radio is pretty amazing. I watch so much Jpopsuki it's probably unhealthy.

you can grab SMS for PS2 and the usbd.irx module to play movies from USB devices (even USB HDDs will work), it's the best option imojayfelice wrote:My playstation 2 is modded and I know Dreamcast might be capable of running media software on it as well. depends on the laser type, there were two known laser manufactures, hitachi and samsung, iirc the hitachi model was way better than the other one. It also depends on the quality of the CD. IMO there is no reason to think CD-Rs would damage the system, it was ment to play them in the first place (specially music CDs that are way worse than data CDs), the reason it makes more noise its because it has to move up and down more (take a look at the game part of a GD-ROM, you'll see that it has less diameter than a CD game).jayfelice wrote:Something about CD-R's make me thinks it kills the laser on Dreamcast. WiiMC also plays Video_TS files. Copy a DVD and it will play the files just as if you we're using the DVD disc. Just find and select Video_TS and the menu will load. Here's and old yt video of mine showing it. This should work on any wii with homebrew channel and wiimc. http://youtube.com/watch?v=4XGMWDmQK-UTonakai wrote:Aye, with a close second probably being the Wii. The Wii doesn't like HD videos though. I'm loading it from USB HDD.
