Sony attempts to prevent second hand games in th future?

Post by DS_Marine » Fri Jan 04, 2013 2:53 pm

Well I just read this on IGN, looks like sony patented some contactless chip to put on game media, and somehow tie the game to your account.
Even if it sounds incredibly stupid (you know, like pairing YOUR VITA MEMORY CARD to your account), could this ever come to see the light of day?

Hmm I don't believe this will happen, retail is such an important part of the gaming industry for these companies. Its where the majority of sales come from, even though Sony or other companies do not make anything from used game sales, it is important to keep the stores happy else you have the USA Sega Saturn early launch date come to play. Basically retail refusing to sell your product at all (EXTREME case). But as Sony says this is nothing but rumor and speculation from this article.

It doesn't seem so unbelievable to me. Its not much different than how most PC games nowadays require an online activation that locks an included CD-Key to a user account. That prevents resale too, after all.

Humm true, but in some at least you can play locally (key is only for online gaming).
Anyway, a blog post about this has been posted

This'd suck even more for anyone who ever lost a system to hardware problems, being robbed, having a bad power surge, etc.
If the special data section can only be written to once, it can never be fixed if there is an error during the write.
Also it would be curious how much account data is stored on the disc, as it could be a security risk to the linked user account.
Plus leaves any linked data burned on a lower OFW than the current at risk of being rejected should an older write method be compromised.

I actually don't buy used games, yet I used to.. If this is the case games may be more expensive? Any how first thing I can think of is, lots of angry people, maybe this may encourage hacking, more for piracy too! Or to like allow used games lol...

Just the rumour alone has already caused a lot of uproar around the internet! Imagine how bad it would be for Sony if they actually did this

Talk about digging your own grave...
-PSP 3000 (03g): 6.61 PRO-C2
-PSP go (05g): 6.61 PRO-C2
-PCH [PS VITA] 1001: OFW 3.XX
