Future of HBL?
Future of HBL?
what is going to happen to half-byte loader now that we have hen for all the latest firmware along with the release of the psp's kirk keys. is development of it going to go dormant or possibly stop completely?

Re: Future of HBL?
The project is open source and open for anyone who wants to get in and continue developing it. But what's true is that now the Kirk keys and algorithms are leaked and eventually something is going to be developed that will remove the need for HBL and kernel exploits, thus making HBL project obsolete. As with everything else, time will tell.

Well, the kirk keys thing is not released yet... I mean, Mathieu said it was a matter of a few hours of work, but AFAIK there's no tool yet... and no definite proof that we can really have something out of this...
If you need US PSN Codes, this technique is what I recommend.

Unless those keys are released or Tn Hen become independent of hbl, Hbl will always be needed everytime.
Great Job m0skit0, wololo And all the devs.

Re: Future of HBL?
I'm guessing for the PSP2 they would probably re-implement the encryption
so that the algorithms and keys become useless again. I would be surprised if they change much of the Playstation system software though so I'm guessing the HBL will once again become useful as a way to run homebrew while we wait for awesomeness in the form of better cracks.
But until then: Yay signing keys!

Re: Future of HBL?
HBL is sticking around for a while. With ofw 6.37 out now, the kexploit for the hen has been patched, and even though some homebrew can be signed not all can.
HBL isn't dead, not yet anyway.
In fact JJS has already made a signed eboot version of hbl which removes the need for a user mode exploit to launch it.
Also IIRC there is a file size limit on eboots that can be signed.JJS wrote: (Also what prevents most homebrews from being successfully signed is that they are compiled as static ELFs)

Re: Future of HBL?
Eh, as long as Sony keeps making new firmwares(which IMHO gives them more work than need be, when they should be working on PSP2), there will be people who update, and people who buy new PSPs(this would happen even if Sony stopped developing the PSP). As long as new patches are made, new exploits will be needed, and thus, found.
Even though the HENs are signed now, Sony can still make a Whitelist of official titles(which would be very time-consuming) to patch the firmware with, so exploits are NEEDED.
Exploit > HBL > HEN
