Logs or coal is required for this to turn something into something else,1 of those are required to smelt 1 object.
Keep in mind that a log can be turned into 2 coals, so always using logs is pointless.
Torch
If you go mining without these, you'll probably going to be killed, remember to never let it get dark while underground

Swords
None-weapons do 9 damage to NPCs.
Stone sword does 24 damage and lasts for 15 kills
Iron sword does 48 damage and lasts for 35 kills
Aluminium sword does 64 damage and lasts for 50 kills
Amazonite sword does 85 damage and lasts for 70 kills
Diamond sword does 100 damage and lasts for 90 kills
